It’s the first time the extremely popular nameplate has been electrified and boy does it look so good!

  • Mahindra Thar gets an electric version, called Thar.e, albeit in a concept form.
  • The electric Thar previews a 5-door version of the nameplate for the first time ever.
  • Based on Mahindra’s new Inglo-P1 platform.
  • Electrification has modernised the Thar’s looks, yet it still looks rugged
  • Cabin is minimalistic and features a big central screen and digital driver’s display
  • No launch timeline has been revealed as of now.

Today, Mahindra has taken the wraps off its all-electric iteration of the Thar concept at its ongoing event in Cape Town, South Africa. Dubbed the Thar.e, it’s the first electric iteration of the off-roader from the SUV Marque. And the bigger news is that this is the first time the five-door version of the nameplate has been revealed.

Looks

It’s no doubt that the Mahindra Thar.e looks beefy and ready for an apocalypse. At the front, it gets an upright nose featuring a glossy black trim with ‘Thar.e’ branding and funky squared-out LED headlights. Below it, the Thar gets a hardy front steel bumper that gives it a rugged and tough look.

In profile, the elongated length is apparent and the Thar.e has an extra set of door for rear-seat occupants. It sits high off the ground and gets squared-out wheel arches with large alloys and off-road spec tyres, giving it a beefy stance. The rear quarter glass also gets a blacked out trim to give the roof a floating effect.

At the rear, the Mahindra Thar.e, like the current model, gets its spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. A beefy rear bumper and squared-out LED tail lamps round off the overall design.

Interior

The interior of the Thar.e is brand new without any resemblance to the current model. The dashboard design is minimalistic, courtesy of the large touchscreen infotainment system and digital driver’s display dominating the cabin. Also, there is a chunky new three-spoke steering wheel and plenty of spaces to keep your knick knacks. Although this surely is a concept-spec cabin, expect quite a few revisions in the production-ready model.

The Mahindra Thar.e is based on the SUV marque’s new Inglo-P1 platform that the SUV marque says it's easy to bolt on to its design. A few modifications have been made to accommodate this new architecture. So the wheelbase ranges from 2775mm and 2975mm to accommodate the battery pack and obviously, the extra doors for the five-door model.

The overhangs on both sides have now been chopped off and that improves the Thar’s approach and departure angles. This being an off-roader should get a dual-motor layout with four-wheel drive to improve off-roading prowess.

Is The Production Version Happening?

Considering that Mahindra has announced it will be electrifying its entire lineup, it’s confirmed that the Thar will go electric. But a timeline is yet to be determined. Once it goes on sale, it will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny EV which is also confirmed for development.
