Think Jeep, and the Wrangler comes to your mind. It is an icon and the brand itself has a fan following, thanks to its portfolio of no-nonsense off-roaders. Jeep is one of the brands that are sticking to their roots and conventional ladder-on-frame SUVs with a solid axle. All this comes on its own off the road, but as we know, the future is electric. In an attempt to stay with the current shift, the American SUV brand has introduced three new SUVs – The Wagoneer S, Avenger and the Recon.
Although all three SUVs are impressive and usher in a much-needed dose of novelty to Jeep’s lineup, we think it is the Recon that’s going to define the brand’s future.
The Wrangler is the best of the best of the best, according to Jeep. And the Wrangler is here to stay no matter what. Jeep might launch an all-electric version of the Wrangler in the future, taking clues from the Magneto 2.0 concept. Right now, they haven’t revealed any solid plans. But Jeep says the Recon takes its inspiration from the Wrangler in many ways.
“The Recon is absolutely inspired by the Wrangler, which is the King of our portfolio”. – Stellantis’ chief design officer, Ralph Gilles
It is obvious from the Recon’s styling that Jeep has turned to its flagship for motivation. The Recon is boxy and unmistakably a jeep with the seven-slat grille, flared arches, rectangular headlights, tail lights and the overall stance.
The Recon is expected to pack in a lot of tech and features when it debuts. Jeep is not revealing many details as of now. But we do know that the Recon gets removable doors with exposed hinges (again from the Wrangler). If removing the doors isn’t enough, the roof also packs in a one-touch power slide option, opening up a good amount of room. The Recon also features a small frunk, thanks to the absence of an engine.
The Recon doesn’t just take inspiration from the Wrangler when it comes to styling. Being a Jeep at heart, it gets a long-travel suspension, impressive approach, departure, and break over angles and knobby tyres. It is underpinned by Stellantis’s STLA large-frame-based EV platform, which also spawns the long-awaited Ram 1500 EV. Jeep’s luxury offering, the Wagoneer S will also be based on the STLA large platform. Apart from this, we also know the SUV will get the Selec-Terrain traction management system and electronically locking axles.
