It is the year 2017 and Taras Kravtchouk, a Swedish designer from New York city with a knack for making eye-catching designs, forms a luxury electric motorcycle company named Tarform. Now what makes Tarform, a small startup from Brooklyn, stand out in the vast pool of electric motorcycle manufacturers? Is it the performance, the features, or the price? Tarform wants to make aesthetically beautiful motorcycles that will stand the test of time. With this vision in mind, their first motorcycle came into existence, the Luna.
Luna is available in two avatars, as a scrambler and as a cafe racer. Both the motorcycles are visually very different but share the same underpinnings. The specs are very interesting to say the least. The Luna is powered by a 11.2kWh li-ion battery pack and gets an air-cooled motor which produces 75PS and 160Nm. With a kerb weight of 200kg, the Luna propels itself from 0-100kmph in just 3.8 seconds and a claimed top speed of 200kmph. The battery provides a range of about 160km in the city and can be fully charged in just 2 hours by a 220V charger.
Visually, the Luna Scrambler has a classic, uncovered headlight, spoked wheels, and off-road tyres. The Luna Racer, on the other hand, resembles a sleek café racer. It has a headlight with a half-fairing, a firmer suspension, and Avon’s Spirit ST tyres.
Along with impressive specs, the Luna gets the top of the line suspension from Ohlins. Braking is managed by two 320mm discs at the front with 6-piston calipers from ISR. Not everything is outsourced though, Tarform made their own ‘Tarform Operating System’. It takes care of over-the-air updates, machine learning, and sensor technology. The latter consists of blind-spot monitoring system and a front-facing camera that gives you a warning to apply the brakes if needed.
On the tech front, the Luna gets a 3.4-inch LED display. It monitors everything that is going on with your motorcycle to help elevate the riding experience.
For Taras Kravtchouk, Tarform’s founder, sustainability and style goes hand in hand. Instead of using carbon fiber, the Luna uses flax fiber. It is a plant based material and requires much less energy to produce. Tarform uses algae pigment for body paint, something which was never done before on a motorcycle. But wait, there’s more! The leather seat on the Luna isn’t even made of real leather. It is made from biodegradable alternatives like plant waste.
If you wish to own one of such beautiful creations, patience should be your virtue. After placing an order, Tarform takes about 4-6 months to manufacture the motorcycle. The prices for the EV start at an equivalent of Rs 20 lakh in the U.S, however, sadly, it is not available in India, and is restricted to the U.S markets.
