Kia has taken the wraps off its brand-new electric SUV concept, the EV5, which will debut first in the Chinese market. As its name suggests, the EV5 will slot below the EV6 and the newly unveiled production-spec EV9 in the carmaker’s lineup. Technical specs are still under wraps though.
The EV5 is a bold-looking SUV, with plenty of design touches making way from the more premium EV9. The design is boxy and chunky, having all the traits an SUV-buyer expects from his vehicle.
Its front end is upright and features a closed-off grille, like the EV9, flanked by aggressively styled headlamps with a snazzy LED DRL insignia, that makes up the carmaker’s Digital Tiger Face. Look closely and you’ll notice tiny DRLs that blend along the bodywork, a design touch that Kia likes to call Signature Light Map technology.
In profile, the SUV has a nice and boxy stance with massive squared wheel arches that are filled by 21-inch alloys. Sharp lines and creases dominate the side profile adding character while the black trim on the C-pillar gives the roof a floating effect. This particular concept is finished in Iceberg Matte Green, though to our eyes, it looks more silver.

In contrast to the swanky front-end and side styling, the rear is rather clean and simple, something similar to the newly launched EV9. A minimalist tailgate houses the sleek C-shaped LED tail lamps, which rounds off the overall exterior design of the concept.
Kia says the EV5’s cabin creates a ‘space of coexistence,’ where nature, people and technology can come together in harmony. Once again, the dashboard design is minimalist, housing the screens seen in plenty of the Korean marque’s new age offerings. Use of light colours should give occupants a calm and soothing experience.

It also gets the swivelling seats, which not only allows for better ingress and egress, but allows you to enjoy the view while sitting in the car. And lastly, the full width panoramic sunroof gives the cabin a much more airy feel, while occupants will be able to enjoy the night sky above them.
Now, details and technical specifications are still under wraps. But, like the EV6, we suspect the EV5 will get multiple battery packs and powertrain options with a realistic long range. More details will be revealed later as the production model breaks cover later this year, starting with China as its debut market.
