With 204PS and 310Nm of instant electric output on offer, the BYD eMAX 7 was poised to be quick. But it definitely exceeded our, and even the carmakers expectations!

BYD has just launched the facelifted version of the e6 MPV in the form of the eMAX 7. The electric MPV gets a fresh design, new interior theme, seating layouts, features and a more powerful powertrain – all as a package of this facelift update. While you can read about our first drive impressions of the Innova Hycross rival here, this piece is an excerpt from that drive.

You see, with the updates to the powertrain, the eMAX 7 now puts out 204PS and 310Nm in its top-spec bigger 71.8kWh battery pack variant. That’s a lot of power for a family MPV, and as a result, BYD claims a rather swift 0-100kmph time of 8.6 seconds.

Ofcourse, with a big footprint and a bigger battery pack, it isn’t a light vehicle by any means, with the MPV tipping the scale just short of the 2 tonne mark (kerb weight). So we were amused by that acceleration figure to say the least, and had to test it out for ourselves. And so we did.

Now given that we usually don’t have our testing equipment on first drives, we weren’t able to carry our full V-box test procedure. But the eMAX 7’s instrument cluster boasts an on-board computer, which was kind enough to time the run for us. With two people onboard, we managed to find a closed stretch of tarmac and hit the pedal to the metal.

And guess what? The eMAX 7 clocked the 100kmph mark in just 8.2 seconds, beating BYD’s own claimed figure for the test. That’s when there were two people onboard, which makes it even more impressive, especially for a big family MPV. To put that in context, it is even quicker than a few enthusiast favourite sedans in the country.
