After just a year of launch, Mahindra has given the XUV400 an update in the form of the new PRO variants, which bring a redesigned cabin and new features to the EV. In comparison to its recently updated chief rival, the Tata Nexon EV, this update was a dire need for the XUV400, which was lagging behind in terms of the look, feel and features inside the cabin. Now that the update is here, let’s pit the two once again and compare their cabin designs:
While both Mahindra and Tata have given their respective cars a premium look, the approach in itself is an antithesis of each other. The XUV400 gets a conventional design with a chunky dashboard, while the Nexon EV takes a minimalist approach with sharper lines.
The XUV400 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment system, which is a new addition for the EV. But the Nexon EV boasts a bigger, more premium looking 12.3-inch infotainment system with a slimmer bezel. The aircon controls for it are touch-sensitive, and have a modern look to it in comparison to the XUV400’s conventional approach with physical knobs and dials, the one we actually prefer, as they’re easier to use on the move.
The steering, too, is different; while the Nexon EV gets a two-spoke unit, the XUV400 has a new flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel. And it has to be said: while the latter does look more sporty, the Nexon exudes a premium vibe with its illuminated logo and piano black finish.
Mahindra has made great strides with the new dual-tone beige/black and white/black colour schemes, which makes it feel much more airy than the outgoing model’s all-black hue. On the other hand, Tata has given the Nexon EV a variant-wise interior theme which includes Black and blue with white highlights, Black and purple, and Black and white themes. You can find details about the Nexon EV’s variant-wise interior theme here.
There’s no beating the Nexon EV, despite the new additions brought in by Mahindra. The Nexon EV packs features like a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, a 10.25-inch driver's display, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, a 9-speaker JBL sound system with a subwoofer, a sunroof, and connected car technology. It even gets vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle charging capabilities, essentially turning it into a portable power bank that can charge other electric vehicles.
The XUV400’s feature highlights include a 10.25-inch touchscreen system, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, a 6-speaker sound system, a height-adjustable driver seat, rear AC vents, USB type-C charging ports, wireless phone charging and over 55 connected car tech features. So while the XUV400 has improved in terms of features offered, the Nexon EV still wins with a highly expansive features list.

While the safety kit is the same for the most part with six airbags, ESC, automatic headlights, and rain-sensing wipers, the Nexon EV boasts blind spot monitoring. Another point to note is that the Tata is the only one here to offer six airbags as standard across the range.

With this new update, Mahindra has also slashed the prices of the XUV400, which now range between Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs Rs 17.49 lakh. The Tata Nexon EV, meanwhile, is sold between Rs 14.74 lakh and Rs 19.94 lakh (ex-showroom).
This update has indeed given the XUV400 the cabin it deserved, making the package a whole lot attractive, at a much lesser price. But still, compared to the decked-out Nexon, it is still a bit conventional and misses out on a few features. But remember, nothing in life is free and the Nexon EV does ask for a considerable premium for those niceties as well.
The Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV only have each other as chief rivals, and come in as an affordable alternative to the MG ZS EV.
