Suzuki has taken the wraps off the 2022 Alto in Japan. However, except for the name, the car doesn’t have anything in common with the model sold in India. For context, the Alto there is a kei car (an ultra-compact and the smallest highway-legal model).
Let's start with the styling. The tiny proportions, bright paint options (you can opt for dual-tone colours as well), and minimalistic styling make the Alto endearing. Suzuki has given it a slightly upright stance to ensure comfortable seating.
Inside, the dashboard design is clean and straightforward. Considering its narrow width, all controls, including the gear lever, are on the dash, similar to the KUV100Nxt.
The kei car features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted audio controls, climate control, analogue dials with a multi-info display, and alloy wheels.
In keeping with Japan’s stringent safety norms, the hatch offers Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision avoidance, and autonomous emergency braking.
Suzuki has yet to reveal the technical specifications of the Japan-spec Alto. That said, we know it will be a hybrid offering capable of running on only electricity as well. The kei car will get an automatic transmission and probably a stick shifter too.
In India, Maruti has started testing the next-gen Alto, and it is expected to reach showrooms in 2022. At an expected starting price of Rs 3.5 lakh, the hatch will lock horns with the Renault Kwid, Datsun redi-GO, and Maruti S-Presso.
