Several popular models are due for updates, and a few luxury EVs are set to arrive

The sedan market in India has grown in spite of the ever-growing popularity of SUVs in our country. Three-box saloons are still aspirational vehicles for family car buyers, and the options in different sub-segments are compelling as ever. If you’ve been waiting to buy a sedan, it’s worth waiting a little longer, considering a flurry of sedans spanning a broad spectrum of prices is expected to land on our shores in 2022.

Here’s the complete list with speculative ex-showroom prices:

Skoda Slavia

Expected price: Rs 10 lakh onwards

The Slavia sedan is scheduled for launch in March 2022. It’s a Honda City rival that will be offered with a choice of two turbo petrol engines – a 115PS 1-litre TSI and a 150PS 1.5-litre TSI – paired with a standard 6-speed manual and optional automatic gearboxes. The Skoda Slavia replaces the ageing Rapid as a larger, more family-friendly sedan, and you find out every little detail about it in our video review

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Expected price: Rs 55 lakh onwards

The C-Class received an update globally in early 2021, and Mercedes has gone far beyond a mere facelift to improve the sedan. For one, it gets a rear-wheel steering system that gives it a turning radius similar to a compact sedan. The standard engine is likely to be a 1.5-litre petrol unit with 204PS/300Nm, and the more powerful 260PS/400Nm 2-litre petrol engine could be offered on the C300 variant. A 48-volt mild hybrid system is standard across the range, adding 20PS and 200Nm to the engine’s output.

BMW i4

Expected price: Rs 80 lakh

The BMW i4 electric luxury sedan will come with 200kW DC fast charging and standard air springs in the rear suspension. The eDrive40 variant that’s likely to arrive in India makes 344PS and delivers a claimed 590km driving range. Unfortunately, it’s only built at BMW’s Munich facility and will be imported as a fully built car, so it could be quite expensive to buy.

Volkswagen Virtus

Expected price: Rs 10 lakh onwards

Volkswagen is expected to launch a compact sedan rival to the Hyundai Verna, based on the same MQB A0 IN platform as the Slavia. It’s likely to get similar 1-litre and 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine and gearbox options, and the features list could be identical, too. But while the Slavia is based on the global market Fabia hatchback, the Virtus is likely to be inspired by the global Polo inside and out. Read our Slavia versus Virtus comparison to know what to expect from the upcoming sedan.

2022 Hyundai Verna

Expected price: Rs 10 lakh onwards

Hyundai has a new generation Verna up its sleeve, and we know from spy shots that it’ll speak the same ‘sensuous sportiness’ design language as the current-gen i20 and globally sold Elantra sedan. It’s likely to be powered by the same 115PS petrol and diesel engines as the existing Verna, and it could even get a mild hybrid powertrain option.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

Expected price: Rs 2 crore onwards

Together, the Mercedes EQS and BMW i4 will carve out a sub-segment for electric luxury limousines in India. Mercedes’ flagship EV stands out with its unique cab-forward styling that makes it incredibly aerodynamic. As standard, it comes with a rear-drive 334PS/458Nm powertrain in the 450+ variant. But we could also get the more powerful 580 4Matic variant in India that makes 523PS/856Nm and scoots to 100kmph in just 4.3 seconds. Similar to other recent Mercedes sedans, the EQS, too, gets rear-wheel steering.

Tesla Model 3

Expected price: Around Rs 60 lakh

After many delays and an ongoing battle for customs duties reduction, Tesla finally seems ready to debut in India with its most affordable global car, the Model 3. Even its standard variant gets you 423km of range, and the Long Range trim takes it up to 568km. India could also receive the Model 3 Performance variant that has enough power to get from 0-100kmph in a sportscar-matching 3.1 seconds. But unless Tesla manages to convince the government to lower taxes and duties, the Model 3 is likely to be priced far out of reach for mass-market car buyers.

Toyota Belta

Expected price: Rs 9 lakh onwards

Toyota will soon bring a new entrant into the midsize sedan market, and it’s called the Belta. It seems near-identical to the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz it’s based on, with changes limited to new badges, front grille and hubcaps. The engine choices could also be similar to the Ciaz, which is powered by a 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine with 5-speed manual and 4-speed torque converter automatic transmissions. It’s also likely to come with the Ciaz’s 12-volt mild hybrid system for improved efficiency.

Honda City Hybrid

Expected price: Rs 18 lakh

Honda will introduce a segment-first electrified powertrain in the City sedan in 2022. The strong hybrid sedan will draw power from a 98PS 1.5-litre engine paired with an integrated starter generator and a separate 109PS/253Nm electric motor. It’ll be capable of driving on electricity alone (for shorter distances), lending the City a much higher fuel efficiency of around 27kmpl.

Tata Tigor CNG

Expected price: Rs 6.5 lakh onwards

The sub-4m Tigor sedan could soon get a factory-fitted CNG option in India. It’s currently powered by an 83PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, paired with a standard 5-speed manual and an optional AMT automatic. Although the Hyundai Aura CNG is the only natural gas-powered rival for the Tigor, it’ll also have to contend with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG and, possibly, the upcoming Honda Amaze CNG.
