Toyota has launched the updated 2022 Starlet premium hatchback in the rainbow nation, also known as South Africa. The Starlet is nothing but the new Glanza hatchback that went on sale in India in March 2022. So, it’s basically Baleno’s badge-engineered sibling. The model is being exported from India like the Baleno.
Design-wise, absolutely none on the outside. The Starlet’s exterior remains exactly the same as the Glanza sold in India. If you want to have a closer look at the new Glanza, head to our detailed image gallery.
There is one big change on the inside and that’s the interior colour scheme. The Starlet’s interior is finished in black/blue, which is the same as the Baleno. FYI, in India, the new Glanza gets a black/beige theme to distance itself from its donor car.
Features On Offer In Starlet
Surprise, surprise, no changes here as well, which ain’t a bad thing. Top trims come loaded with features like a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry with push button start, and auto-folding ORVMs.
Passenger safety is taken care of by six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill start assist, and electronic stability control.
Here’s where the major change lies. While the India-spec Glanza gets a 1.2-lire petrol engine, the Starlet gets a larger 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, like the South African-spec Baleno, teamed to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic.
The Starlet is priced from ZAR 226,200 (around Rs 11.31 lakh). In India, the Glanza is priced from Rs 6.53 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it in contention with the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, and Honda Jazz.
