Hyundai India, take a bow! The 2023 Hyundai Verna has scored an impressive five stars in the revised Global NCAP crash safety tests, making it the first made-in-India Hyundai to nail the crash test. This is especially significant, as models such as the Creta and Grand i10 Nios fared poorly in their previous outing at Global NCAP.
The 2023 Hyundai Verna secured five stars in Adult Occupation Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). Considering that the new Verna’s platform underpins the recently launched 2023 Seltos and Creta, we have similar expectations when the updated models are put through their paces in the crash safety test.
In the frontal impact test, the 2023 Hyundai Verna offered good protection to both front occupants’ heads and necks. While protection to the driver’s chest was rated marginal, the same for the co-driver was rated good. The shielding to both the occupants’ knees were rated as marginal as they could come in impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard. It also offered adequate protection to the driver’s tibias, while the same for co-driver was rated adequate and good.

Coming to the side pole test, save for the occupant’s chest, which had adequate protection, the Verna offered good protection to the dummy’s head, pelvis and abdomen. In the side pole impact test, the sedan’s curtain airbags met the fitment requirements and offered good protection to the head and pelvis. The chest, meanwhile, had marginal protection, while the abdomen had adequate shielding.
Regardless of its impressive performance, Global NCAP still rated the Verna’s body shell and footwell area as unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Both the three-year-old and 18-month-old child dummies were placed in rearward-facing child seats. It was able to prevent head exposure and offered full protection for both the dummies during the frontal impact protection. Also, in the side impact test, both the dummies were offered full side impact protection.
Global NCAP also appreciated the fact that the Verna gets three-point seatbelts for all occupants at the rear as well as legible ISOFIX markings. However, the only fly in the ointment is that you can’t disable the passenger airbag in the Verna.
Another reason that did help the Verna get a perfect score is its expansive safety kit. As standard, the sedan gets six airbags, electronic stability control, hill start assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. Pick up the higher-end variants and you get even more, such as ADAS, front parking sensors, and an electronic parking brake.
The 2023 Hyundai Verna is the third model in its segment to nail the Global NCAP crash safety test after the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus. Prices for Hyundai’s compact sedan start from Rs 10.97 lakh (ex-showroom), and apart from its aforementioned rivals, it also locks horns with the Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
