The SUV completed the hill climb in 10 minutes and 32 seconds.
The previous record was held by the Bentley Bentayga with a time of 10 minutes and 49 seconds.
The upcoming SUV will be powered by the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine as before.
Lamborghini is expected to unveil two new variants of Urus and the Huracan Sterrato by mid-August.
Lamborghini sure knows a thing or two when it comes to drama and anticipation. The Italian supercar maker has announced a new version of the popular Urus in a rather interesting way.
The Sant'Agata Bolognese-based manufacturer flew in Pirelli test driver Simone Faggioli and a group of boffins along with a camouflaged version of the super SUV to Pikes Peak and broke the SUV record for the hill climb.
Pikes Peak hill climb, otherwise known as the race to the clouds, is an iconic event which has a legendary status in the world of motorsports. Up until now, the Bentley Bentayga was the record holder for SUVs with a time of 10:49.902.
However, the Urus has beaten the Bentayga to the top of the summit by 18 seconds, clocking a time of 10:32.064. The exact technical details of the SUV are still in the dark as the Italians are yet to officially reveal the car.
But, we do know that the camouflaged SUV piloted by Simone was powered by the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. For obvious safety reasons, the SUV was fitted with a roll cage, race seats with a six-point harness and a fire extinguisher.
The SUV also featured 285/40 R22 and 325/35 R22 Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres at the front and back, respectively. Although the name sounds familiar, these semi-slick tyres are actually updated versions and have been specifically developed for the new Urus.
The standard Urus’ V8 develops 650PS and 850Nm and is mated to an 8-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. It is capable of surpassing the 100kmph mark in 3.6 seconds and hitting a top speed of 305kmph.
Lamborghini might be planning to snatch the world’s fastest SUV crown with the new Urus. The recently launched Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT happens to be one of the fastest SUVs in the world and is definitely the fastest around the Nurburgring. But in terms of sheer speed, the 707PS Aston Martin DBX 707 is the fastest SUV in the world.
Is Lamborghini finally giving the Urus ST-X a shot? Or is this the Urus EVO that got papped recently? Sadly, we need to wait a couple of more days to answer these questions. Lamborghini is expected to reveal two versions of the Urus and the off-road focused Huracan Steratto in mid-August.
