The facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari used to share more similarities than differences; but still, their respective packages, this time around, are more different than ever

After a hectic spy campaign by the paparazzis followed by a rather short teaser operation, both the facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari broke cover one after the other. They receive a similar treatment to a very large extent, but there’s more to separate the two than ever with this latest update.

So in this story, we take a look at the similarities and differences between the 2023 Harrier and Safari facelift. Let’s begin with the design

2023 Harrier vs Safari: Design

While the treatment of the changes on both the Harrier and Safari are similar, they get exclusive styling cues that offer distinctive identities.

So even though the connected DRL setup and grille design might be the same, their respective bumper and headlamp housing designs are slightly different. Also different is the design for the fog lamp housing, which is sharper and triangular in the Harrier and squarish in the Safari.

In profile, both sit on newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels with exclusive designs for each of them for differentiation. Both get their respective nameplates on the lower front door, while the obvious difference lies in the additional row of the Safari, which clearly increases the length of the car. As a result, the Safari gets a more pronounced third rear window.

The differences at the rear are similar to what we saw in their respective front ends. The design of the connected LED light setup is unique for both, while you can also spot different bumper designs. The Harrier’s reversing lights are housed in a sharper covering, while the Safari follows its squarish outline.

To conclude the styling, Tata surely has differentiated the styling between the Harrier and Safari more than before with this facelift.

The cabin of the 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari are identical in terms of layout. The dashboard has received a redesign with sleeker AC vents and touch-sensitive HVAC controls, which are mutual between the two SUVs. Both get the four-spoke steering wheel with the illuminated brand emblem, and a Land Rover-inspired gear lever for the automatic variants.

But what is different are the colours used, thanks to the various themes on offer, which depend upon the ‘personas’ of the SUVs. You can check out the variant-wise interior and exterior colours of the Harrier and Safari by clicking this link.

2023 Harrier vs Safari: Features

The Tata Harrier and Safari were already laden with features before this facelift; and with this update, the few misses that they had have now been catered to as well. New features include a fully digital 10.25-inch driver’s display, larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, knee airbag (total: 7), powered tailgate with gesture opening, rear sunshades and a powered co-driver’s seat (in Harrier) .

These are offered over the existing list of features, which include ventilated front and second row seats (6-seater Safari), connected car technology, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera and an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package. One more point to note is that the ADAS suite now has Adaptive Cruise Control, something which wasn’t offered in the pre-facelift models.

There are no differences between the two in terms of features.

2023 Harrier vs Safari: Powertrains

Tata has retained the 170PS 2-litre diesel engine offered with the Harrier and Safari previously. It can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission as before. The latter now gets paddle shifters, but there’s still no petrol engine on offer.

The Harrier has a slightly better fuel efficiency with 16.8kmpl for the manual and 14.6kmpl for the automatic, in comparison to Safari’s 16.3kmpl for the manual and 14.5kmpl for the automatic.

As before, the Safari is likely to be priced slightly higher than the Harrier’s prices, which could be bumped up in light of all the changes implemented. The Harrier currently retails between Rs 15.19 lakh and Rs 24.26 lakh, while the Safari is priced from Rs 15.84 lakh to Rs 25.21 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). The Harrier will rival the MG Hector, Mahindra XUV700 5-seater and Jeep Compass, while the Safari will take on the likes of the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700 in the market.
