BMW has launched its middle child of the premium sedan range, the 5 Series, with a new-gen model that not only boasts a completely redesigned exterior but also features an updated interior with plenty of tech onboard. Priced at Rs 72.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it primarily rivals another German premium sedan, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is also available in a long wheelbase version.
If you are considering any of the aforementioned saloons, checkout the key differences between them.

Mercedes offers the E-Class in three variants: E 200, E 220d, and E 350d, while the 5 Series is available in a single 530Li variant. When you compare the entry-level E-Class with the 5 Series, you save Rs 3.15 lakh with the Bimmer. However, the entry-level E 200 is powered by a petrol engine, and if you are looking for a diesel engine, you will have to opt for the higher-spec E-Class, which is priced up to Rs 89.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The 5 Series is only offered with a single turbo-petrol engine choice.

Both premium sedans are well-equipped with tech for convenience and safety. However, the 5 Series goes a step further with a larger 14.9-inch infotainment system, four-zone climate control, and ventilated front-row seats. However if you fancy a sunroof, the E-Class does a better job with a panoramic sunroof, while the 5 Series has a closed panoramic glass roof.
Safety-wise, both cars are equipped with features such as multiple airbags and a 360-degree camera. The 5 Series includes ADAS, which the E-Class lacks, but the E-Class offers safety tech like active brake and park assist.

When it comes to engine options, the E-Class leaves you spoilt, offering multiple diesel choices in addition to a petrol option. However, when comparing the power output of their petrol engines, the 5 Series is more potent, producing 61 PS and 80 Nm more. All engine options of the E-Class are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, while the 5 Series is offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
To summarise, the 2024 BMW 5 Series offers slightly more in this comparison. With the 5 Series, you get a bigger vehicle and a tad bit more features. That said, it’s not like the E-Class is lacking in terms of size or features. And if you want a diesel luxury saloon, then the Merc will be your only option with multiple engine choices .
Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference. If you go with the 5 Series, you not only save Rs 3.15 lakh but also get a more powerful petrol engine. On the other hand, if you are in the market for a more torquey diesel engine, the E-Class remains your only choice between the two. Do note, there’s a new E-Class on its way to India, and we’ll be back with a new comparison when that arrives.
