The Indian hatchback segment has yet again been spiced up with the entry of the all-new fourth-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift. Giving a tough competition to other rivals in the segment, it will be a direct rival to the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, which is one of the hot-selling cars for Hyundai in the Indian market. In this article, we take a closer look at how these two hatchbacks rack up against each other on paper, before we bring out a comprehensive road test comparison of them both.

It is pretty evident from the table above that the new-gen Swift is longer and wider than the Grand i10 Nios, while both of their height and wheelbase remain identical. It also has a slightly larger boot, but the Swift loses out on the i10 in terms of ground clearance by a whisker.

Both the hatchbacks are well-stacked in terms of the comfort, convenience, and safety equipment list. Considering the current era customer requirements, both the hatchbacks get an infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (Swift gets a larger 9-inch screen), wireless phone charger, rear AC vents, reverse parking camera with sensors, automatic climate control system, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, cruise control, and connected car tech features.
Safety features encompass 6-airbags, ESP, Hill-hold assist and ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard across the variants. The Swift however misses out on a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Both the cars offer a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission. In terms of power output, both the hatchbacks score almost equally on paper. Furthermore, there is an option of CNG to choose from only in the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. There is no confirmation from Maruti Suzuki yet, if they will be introducing a CNG variant for the Swift in the near future.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios scores brownie points when it comes to the pricing. Both the entry level and top-spec trims of the Grand i10 Nios are priced lower than the Swift. The base Era variant of the Grand i10 Nios is Rs 57,000 less than the LXI variant of the Swift, and the top-spec Asta variant of the Grand i10 is Rs 1.08 lakh less than the ZXI+ variant of the Swift. All this hints at the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios being a more cost-effective hatchback.
Both these hatchbacks rival the Tata Tiago, Citroen C3, and are smaller alternatives to micro-SUVs like the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite, and Hyundai Exter.
