Proper 4x4 system with a low-range gearbox and hill descent control.
A Suzuki Jimny spotted in Mumbai might be the first SUV of its kind in the country. It has likely arrived via the Carnet route for a limited time period, but nonetheless, it reminds us how cool and desirable the Jimny still is. Maruti will bring a new four-door, five-seater version of the SUV to India, which is expected to be launched in early 2023.
The Kinetic Yellow Jimny has Dubai number plates indicating that it is a Carnet car. Carnet is an internationally recognised customs document that allows the holder to carry specific business items such as cars across country borders. India accepts ATA Carnet and UN-TIR Carnet, applicable in 78 and 59 countries, respectively.

Under the bonnet, the Maruti Jimny will likely get a 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Jimny has Suzuki’s All Grip Pro four-wheel drive tech with brake-locking differentials, stability control, hill descent control and four-low mode. It could be offered in a less expensive two-wheel drive version.

Spy shots tell us that the upcoming five-door Jimny will retain the short overhangs and appealing boxy design of the global three-door version. Once launched, it will face off against the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. It’s expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh onwards (ex-showroom).
