The SUV will make its debut at the Auto Expo in January 2023
  • The five-door Jimny could be launched with the Gypsy moniker in India.

  • To be equipped with the 1.5-litre DualJet engine paired to the AllGrip 4x4 system.

  • Expected price to begin from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • 1.4-litre turbo petrol also on the cards.

By now, we’ve all seen the five-door Jimny on test numerous times, from making its first appearance in the country to high-altitude testing. Well, it has made yet another appearance papped from inside the Mahindra Thar, giving us a clue about its road presence. Without further adieu, let’s dive right into what the spy shots have in store.

Road Presence in contrast to Mahindra Thar

The eagled-eyed will notice that the spy shots have been taken onboard a Mahindra Thar. Now that helps put its road presence in perspective, which looks to be a tad bit smaller. Placed side-by-side, the Jimny seems shorter in height compared to the grandiose Thar.

Although we expect the five-door Jimny to be slightly taller than the Wagon R, another image reveals the SUV going almost neck-to-neck with the hatchback beside it. For reference, the standard three-door Jimny in markets abroad is 1720mm tall, while the Wagon R and the Brezza sold here stand at 1675mm and 1685mm, respectively.

The 103PS 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine powering Maruti’s larger offering like the Ertiga and Grand Vitara will be deployed in the Jimny 5-door as well. The addition of Maruti’s peppy 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol isn’t ruled out as an optional powertrain. Following the international-spec standard Jimny, the India-spec model will also get Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4x4 system.

As revealed by earlier spy shots, the cabin of the Jimny 5-door is going to be similar to the standard SUV sold abroad. Its features list should get a nine-inch infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, up to six airbags, hill-hold assist, and more.

Sales timeline

Considering the testing Maruti’s been putting the Jimny through, we expect a launch to be on the horizon. The Auto Expo will provide the grounds for the five-door Jimny’s debut, which could be christened as the Gypsy in India.

The SUV will likely be retailed through Maruti’s NEXA outlets with an expected price tag starting from Rs 10 lakh onwards (ex-showroom). It will square off against the upcoming five-door Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha off-roaders.
