There’s just something singular about modern retro-style cars that gets one’s blood pumping. The unapologetic retro styling blended with modern engineering and technology is a niche but sweet spot in the automobile industry and it's about to get sweeter with the revival of a legend called Cobra. Yes, the AC Cobra (widely known as Shelby Cobra) is going to make a comeback in 2023 to celebrate the brand’s 122nd anniversary.
Now AC says that the styling is based on a clean sheet design, but it’ll still retain the iconic timeless shape of the '60s model - and it better (we wish at least)! It isn’t something that’s outlandish, but rather, its curvaceous body almost craves and demands attention. For a thing that’s more than 60 years old, the Cobra holds its own, and we hope AC sticks to its words when it says the familiar bodywork will stay.
The new AC Cobra GT roadster will boast an extruded aluminium space frame chassis developed specially by two Italian design houses: Icona Design Group and Cecomp Spa. The hand-finished manufacturing process will deploy cutting-edge materials and technology, and each unit of the limited-run sports car will be commissioned according to the bespoke taste of the clients.

The teased images show a silhouette that is reminiscent of the original Cobra, but this one will be the largest of the lot with a wheelbase of 2,570mm. Somewhere under the long bonnet will be a V8 engine belting out as much as 663PS and 780Nm. Pair that with a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic gearbox in a car that weighs less than 1,500kg (thanks to a carbon composite body), and you’re looking at a nought to 100 kmph sprint time of around 3.6 seconds. We are already drooling!
AC says that the new Cobra will be tuned accordingly to offer a complete grand-tourer experience, capable of both carving corners just and munching long miles. Creature comforts won’t be sparse with features like air conditioning, electric windows and an infotainment system to be offered. An optional removable hardtop will also be available to make it all the more usable on a daily basis.

The modern interpretation of the British icon will be unveiled in London next year and will be produced in limited numbers only. People interested can go and put their names down on AC’s website, and if you really want one, we reckon you go and do it quickly because this one will surely have a long list of takers.
