It’s the third BMW M motorcycle to launch after the M 1000 RR and the M 1000 R

Most Powerful Sports Tourer

The 2024 BMW M 1000 XR has been launched in India at Rs 45,00,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), making it the most expensive sport tourer in India today. It is also the most powerful production sports tourer in the world. At the price, it gets the M Competition package as standard, which adds in a whole bunch of lightweight carbon fibre components that make this XR a good 3kg lighter than its standard variant.

Since it’s the sportier version, let's first look at the performance bits. It gets the same liquid-cooled 999cc inline-four engine from the M 1000 RR, which now makes 203PS at 12,750rpm and 113Nm at 11,000rpm. It also has revised gearing, courtesy of a 47-teeth sprocket on the rear wheel. That, paired with the kerb weight of 223kg, is enough to propel it from 0 to 100kmph in 3.2 seconds, and then on to a top speed of 278kmph (both claimed). Suspension on this XR is handled by a fully adjustable 45mm inverted fork with dynamic damping control and fully adjustable monoshock.

The most expensive sport tourer

The M Competition package gives this XR the Black Storm paint job and carbon fibre bits including wheels, panels, chainguard, front and rear fenders, and ignition lock cover. The rider and passenger footpegs are fully adjustable. On the front are winglets that help keep the front wheel on the road when accelerating hard. Talking of, the front wheel has a 120mm wide tyre while the rear has 200mm.

There are five riding modes – Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race, and RacePro (3 levels). Rider aids include cornering traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, launch control, pit lane limiter, brake slide assist, bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and hill-start assist.

The rider can keep a tab on their riding data with the help of the 6.5-inch TFT display. There’s also an M GPS Datalogger and M GPS Laptrigger which can be connected via the on-board diagnostics port. Other bits include adjustable windscreen and levers, lightweight lithium-ion M battery, USB charging socket and all-LED lighting.

Instrument cluster of the new M 1000 XR

The BMW M 1000 XR’s only rival is the Ducati Multistrada V4 RS, which is yet to make its way to India. Summing up, the M 1000 XR is more of a niche bike that pushes the limit of engineering on a sports tourer.
