BMW S 1000 XR is the S 1000 RR’s touring-oriented sibling; bookings for the R 1300 GS start from Rs 50,000

Launched at Rs 22.50 lakh

The BMW S 1000 XR has been launched in India at Rs 22.5 lakh (ex-showroom). This comes in after the recent launch of the BMW M 1000 XR, which is priced at a whopping Rs 45 lakh. The S 1000 XR is essentially a toned-down sport-touring avatar of the BMW S 1000 RR.

The sport tourer is powered by a 999cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine that makes 172PS at 11,000rpm and 114Nm at 9250rpm. The engine also acts as a stressed member of the frame. It’s paired with a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch and a bi-directional quickshifter. Rider aids on the XR include four riding modes, engine brake control, and cruise control.

Front and back

The XR also has adaptive suspension on both ends with a steering damper. The stock wheels are 17-inch cast aluminium units but can be upgraded to forged units by opting for the M-Sport package. The S 1000 XR has a stock seat height of 840mm which can be lowered to 790mm, and a 226kg kerb weight.

The optional M-Sport package mentioned earlier also includes a special livery, a lightweight battery, a lap timer, a sport seat, a sportier exhaust, M Endurance chain (which BMW claims needs no maintenance), and a shorter windshield. If you haven’t guessed, this optional package brings out the sporty character of the S 1000 XR, making it a sport-tourer that you can ride to the track, break some lap records, and then ride back home!

For the price the BMW S 1000 XR commands, you can also get the Ducati Multistrada V4, which makes about the same power. But if you are willing to pay some more, you can get the bonkers Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX SE that makes 200PS… talk about touring fast!

Bookings open unofficially

However, if you want a ‘proper’ Bavarian adventure bike, the BMW R 1300 GS will be launched soon in India, for which some BMW dealers in India are already accepting bookings for a refundable sum of Rs 50,000. The R 1300 GS will be offered in four variants, and our sources tell us the big daddy GS will be launched late-June, and will be priced between Rs 25 lakh to 35 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the variant. However, that stands to be confirmed, depending on when BMW officially launches the ADV bike in India.
