The Jimny was this close to its launch, but another production-related problem – you guessed it, supply chain issues – has played spoilsport

Ever since it first came out in Europe in 2017, Indian enthusiasts have been waiting to get their hands on the latest generation Jimny. The SUV has been out of reach for India for too long, and now it seems that the wait is about to get a lot longer. Maruti won’t be able to deliver the first batch of Jimny SUVs until 2024, citing the same reason as many other carmakers in India and overseas: global supply chain disruptions.

Longer wait, better Jimny?

Maruti has taken its own sweet time to bring the Jimny to India. The carmaker, with a fervent addiction to volume sales, said numerous times that the Jimny was being evaluated for our country, but it wasn’t until last year that an actual made-for-India Jimny showed up for testing in the Himalayan mountains wearing full Dalmatian camo.

After such a lengthy waiting time, the Jimny could even be updated with features by the time the current version reaches buyers. It’s pretty feature-loaded for its segment, but it’ll certainly benefit from additions such as a heads-up display, a sunroof and the new six-speed automatic gearbox that’s already offered in Maruti SUVs such as the Brezza and Grand Vitara.

However, the Jimny’s ages-long waiting period comes at a time when its hype barometer is in the red zone. With thousands of bookings racking up each month, it’ll take a long while for the carmaker to even complete its first batch of deliveries. And keep in mind, there’s no end in sight for supply chain problems, so the 2024 timeline could get longer.

Happy April Fools Day! Whatever you read in this article until this point were lies we invented. To be honest, no official timeline has been announced by the carmaker for the Jimny’s launch, but it’s expected to be right on schedule around May-June, 2023. Everything from this point onwards is factually correct, except for the prices that are based on our honest expectations.
