The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is one cutesy tiny SUV. In fact, it’s so small that it’s just as long as the Mahindra Thar 3-door, while being slightly taller and wider as say… a Wagon R. So yeah, it isn't exactly large, considering it’s a 5-door model. Hmmm.. so one question that immediately popped into our mind is how comfortable will the cabin be for plus-sized people.
Well, to answer that question, Tushar Kamath, our office’s 6.5 foot tall pehalwan give it a go.

Obviously, the front seat was pushed all the way back, considering Tushar is taller than most normal human beings. While average-sized adults won’t find the cabin lacking for space, those with broad shoulders/a hefty build will find themselves wishing for a wider cabin and you might want for a larger gap between driver and co-driver. And the steering, in its default high position, was interfering with his thighs. =

But there are positives too. First, there’s acres of headroom so users well over 6ft in height will be comfortable. Additionally, the footwell is spacious with no centre console intrusion that fouls with your driving position (an issue in the Thar) and the dashboard won’t foul with your knees either. So there’s more legroom footroom than even say the Mahindra Thar to stretch out and sit comfortably. The seat bolsters aren’t as firm as the Thar’s either, so it’s a little more accommodating for large frames, if not ideal.
With the front seats fully pushed back in Tushar’s driving position, he wasn’t able to squeeze himself inside the car. But with the front seats pushed to Arun’s height, who is 6 foot tall, Tushar was just able to get in easily. So while it’s not a very large car in dimensions, the Jimny’s cabin, save for cabin width, is actually very roomy!

Do note that there are only two seats and seatbelts at the rear, so the Jimny is strictly a four-seater. There’s no lap belt and squeezing in a third person will be tight here. As for rear seat comfort, the seats are small and underthigh support is on the short side. But headroom, on the other hand, is good with room to spare for someone even as tall as Tushar.
Pre-launch bookings for the Maruti Suzuki Jimny are underway and bookings have already crossed the 5,000 mark. Prices are expected to be announced in a couple of months and you can expect it to range between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). As for its rivals, the SUV currently goes up against the three-door versions of the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, both of which will get five-door versions soon.
