April 2023 will see the second and more stringent phase of BS6 emission norms get implemented in the country. While we’ll see many cars get upgraded to meet them, a handful of models will be discontinued due to the high cost of upgrading or due to them simply not bringing enough sales to make them viable. The first two cars we know will be discontinued are the Skoda Octavia and Superb.
Both models are brought to India as completely knocked down (CKD) units. They are powered by the 190PS 2-litre turbo-petrol engine, driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With an average sales of less than 200 units a piece per month, it simply doesn’t make sense to upgrade them to meet the upcoming stringent emission standards.
Skoda said it is analysing how to bring both cars back to the market. That said, their return hasn’t been finalised just yet. Internationally, Skoda is already working on the next iteration of the Superb, while the Octavia, which was revealed in 2019, is due for a facelift. So probably, both cars could come back to India updated and probably with a greener powertrain.
That said, only time will tell us about what the carmaker plans to do about these two models. So from April 2023 onwards, Skoda’s mainstream range will consist of the Kushaq compact SUV, Slavia compact sedan and the Kodiaq premium seven-seater. Plus, the carmaker will focus on bringing hybrid and electric models to the stable, notably the latest Octavia RS iV and Enyaq iV, both of which will be full imports.
