One should learn how to create hype for a product from Hyundai, as the Korean carmaker has been on a teaser spree ahead of the launch of the upcoming new generation Verna.
But this time around, we finally have a couple of clear sketches of the sedan revealed by the carmaker itself, giving us a clear idea on how the new compact sedan will look like, ahead of its March 21 launch.
The design team at Hyundai has really put in some work for the sixth-generation avatar of the Verna because it isn’t exactly recognisable at first glance. It’s only when you look at the number plate in the sketch that you realise this actually is the upcoming Verna, but people familiar with the new Elantra sold overseas won’t be having this identity enigma.
Don’t get us wrong, it still is unmistakably a Hyundai, thanks to the parametric grille design dominating the ‘face’ that has become a brand identity of sorts for the Korean marque. This grille is flanked by headlights that sport a tri-element setup and the front lip is rather sporty for a Verna. The DRL is a single thin strip of LED, like the Staria MPV, that spans the width of the car, giving a very futuristic vibe to the front.
The compact sedan looks a lot bigger in profile, and that’s down to its stretched silhouette. But what actually aids the sporty and future-proof appeal are the huge blingy-looking alloy wheels which fill up the wheel arches very nicely, adding a very coherent feel to the design. The numerous creases and chiselled body panels further look the part and aid the sporty design.
And with Hyundai being the cheeky teaser that it has been in recent times, the carmaker has kept the guessing game alive as it didn’t reveal the sketch for the rear of the compact sedan. But if the rest of the design is anything to go by, the rear should also be full of sporty touches and sharp creases. A connected LED taillight is already confirmed by earlier spy shots and the side image also reveals a small spoiler lip on the bootlid– another sporty touch.
The new generation Verna will also bring major changes to the powerhouse of the compact sedan, which will ditch the diesel altogether. Instead, there will be petrol and turbo-petrol powertrain options, and the latter might just make the Verna the most potent in its respective segment. More details on it are here.
That aside, we know that Hyundai will offer it in four trims: EX, S, SX, and SX(O). Expect the carmaker to leave no stone unturned in terms of offering premium features as the top-spec trims should pack kit such as a branded sound system, sunroof, a digital driver’s display, powered front seats, a digital driver’s display, ventilated seats, and a 360-degree camera.
The radar housed in the middle of the grille confirms ADAS functionality, which could include features such as blind spot detection and adaptive cruise control. Other features in the safety net should consist of multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

All the new features and the new snazzy design language will surely make the pricing of the upcoming compact sedan creep upwards over the outgoing model priced at Rs 9.64 lakh. It'll rival the Maruti Ciaz, Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus, and the upcoming 2023 facelifted Honda City.
