Ducati is all set to join the electric bandwagon. And given its extensive racing heritage and success, what better way to do that than by signing an agreement to produce electric race bikes for none other than MotoE, the pinnacle of electric motorcycle racing.
According to this agreement, Ducati will be the sole supplier of electric race bikes for the MotoE cup from 2023 to 2026. This will be the bikemaker’s first ever take on electric motorcycles, since till now we’ve only seen electric cycles from the Italian stable.
Currently, the MotoE race bikes are based on the Energica Ego Corsa, which puts out around 120kW (163PS) and 215Nm. Expect Ducati to eke out even more juice from their electric bike, just like it does with its Desmosedici GP21.
So what does this mean for people like you and us? Well, in recent times, Ducati’s sport bikes have taken inspiration from its MotoGP project--case in context, the Panigale V4. And the same can be expected for Ducati’s first electric motorcycle. Add to this the fact that the Volkswagen Group (Ducati’s parent company) plans to go all-electric by 2030, and suddenly, an electric Ducati Panigale sounds quite realistic.
However, all this is still some time away considering Ducati will first bring out its electric race bike and then start focussing on a road bike. It is surely on the horizon, though.
