The early bird incentive was earlier offered until the end of 2021

In its 2021 electric vehicle (EV) policy revision, the Maharashtra government had provided an incentive for early bird adopters who bought an EV by the end of December 2021. For electric cars, this benefit of Rs 1 lakh, paired with the state subsidies, had amounted to a whopping Rs 2.5 lakh off the EV’s price. Maharashtra will offer the benefits until March 31, 2022.

It’s no secret that a global semiconductor shortage has afflicted the car industry and delayed the production and deliveries of new vehicles.

Only two models of cars qualify for subsidies under the Maharashtra government’s norms – the Tata Tigor EV and Nexon EV. Other electric vehicles, from the Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV, to the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron, don’t qualify for subsidies since they have batteries larger than the 30kWh upper limit set by the government. All EVs including two-wheelers are exempt from paying road taxes and registration fees in the state.

The benefits don’t stop here – if you agree to get your older car scrapped at a state-registered scrapyard, you can get an additional Rs 25,000 from the government in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, electric two-wheeler buyers get Rs 15,000 as an early bird incentive, Rs 10,000 state subsidy, Rs 7,000 scrapping benefit, and Rs 12,000 in other subsidies, in addition to the FAME-II subsidy (Rs 15,000/kWh of battery capacity, up to 40 percent of the bike or scooter’s cost)

Maharashtra’s early bird incentives make it the most generous state in which to buy an EV. Several other states are stepping up with subsidies that match the central government’s FAME-II benefits. However, electric cars will no longer be subsidised in Delhi, since the state government has reached its target of 1,000 subsidised four-wheelers. The upper limit for Maharashtra is 10,000 electric cars, according to the official state EV policy.
