The Indonesia-spec unit boasts a full suite of ADAS features in its higher trims

  • Facelifted Hyundai Creta tested by ASEAN NCAP was an Indonesia-spec model.

  • Higher-spec trims get ADAS like lane-keep assist and blind spot detection.

  • The SUV scored a full five-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash tests.

  • Frontal compartment remained stable, which isn’t the case of the India-spec model currently.

  • The model on sale in India has a three-star Global NCAP safety rating and an unstable body.

  • India-spec model’s safety, with expected ADAS, could boast the Indonesian car’s safety rating.

The facelifted Hyundai Creta, which is currently on sale in the Indonesian market, has been crash-tested by ASEAN NCAP. The SUV passed the test with flying colours as it achieved a full five-star rating. This was achieved by the base-spec Active variant sold in Indonesia. The SUV will make its way to India sometime next year, although the India-spec model could get a better score due to the probable presence of ADAS.

The model used for this crash test was the base-spec Active variant sold in the Indonesian market. It gets only the basic safety features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability control. Plus, ASEAN NCAP tested a higher-spec variant with ADAS to assess the safety assist systems and their working.

In terms of percentages, the SUV garnered 86 per cent safety rating for adult occupant protection, while child safety was rated at 77 per cent. Its safety assist equipment got a 70 per cent rating, while pedestrian safety was measured at 57 per cent. The Indonesia-spec Creta secured five stars in all the categories it was tested in.

Adult Occupant Protection

Adults sitting upfront in the facelifted Hyundai Creta are fairly protected as the test revealed good upper body protection. However, the driver’s leg would receive adequate lower protection in case of a frontal impact, found ASEAN NCAP. The results of the side impact test weren’t that impressive as it offered only marginal cover for the chest. The frontal compartment remained stable, which isn’t the case with the current India-spec car.

Child Occupant Protection

For determining the protection of children during a crash, both the three-year old and 1.5-year-old child dummies were placed facing rearward and had leg support in the installation. Now, ASEAN NCAP didn’t give a detailed overview of the Creta’s child protection capability, but its overall scores tallied to a perfect five star safety rating.

The facelifted Creta’s safety assists include standard equipment like ABS, ESC, and seat belt reminder (front only) along with a host of ADAS technology including blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking (both city and highway).

Out of this, ASEAN NCAP tested the Creta for autonomous emergency braking and blind spot detection, both of which were up to the requirement, resulting in a score of 14.79 out of the maximum 21 points for safety assists, which resulted in a full five-star rating. For the blind spot detection system, the car secured 9.14 points out of the total score of 16. Again, a five-star rating.

The facelifted Creta is expected to reach our shores sometime next year and it should get the same ADAS features as the Indonesia-spec model. Apart from that, like the current model, it should get up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, TPMS and hill-hold assist as part of its safety suite.

It remains to be seen whether the India-spec facelifted Creta, set to launch next year, will improve upon its current three-star safety rating achieved in the Global NCAP test, considering the probable addition of ADAS. The new SUV will continue to lock horns with the likes of the MG Astor, Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700 and the Skoda Kushaq.
