Fisker is about to set foot in India with a new global technology centre in Hyderabad. Reportedly, the American carmaker is bringing in the Ocean SUV as its debut electric vehicle (EV) in the country. An affordable global EV called the Pear is in the pipeline for 2024. In an interview, CEO Henrik Fisker has indicated that it could be locally built in India and priced from around Rs 23 lakh.

Fisker Karma Revero GT electric sedan

We know of Fisker for its iconic Karma hybrid sportscar and novel concepts such as the SC2 hypercar. The carmaker had revealed its upcoming luxury electric SUV, the Ocean, in 2021. It will be produced in a carbon-neutral facility in Austria, starting late 2022, and is expected to be imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU).

According to Henrik Fisker, the Ocean could later be assembled in India depending on the demand. Local assembly is likely to help the carmaker offer its SUV at better prices in the country.

The Fisker Ocean is a luxury SUV that delivers a range of 400km in the standard Sport variant. Its electric motor produces 275PS and propels the EV from 0-100kmph in just 6.9 seconds. In comparison, the top-spec Ocean Extreme variant is faster with its 550PS dual electric motors, and it claims a range of upto 560km. It even comes with a solar panel on the roof that can potentially give you 2,500km to 3,000km of range every year.

Little is known about the Pear, but reports suggest it will be a city car smaller than the Ocean, aimed at entry-level EV buyers. It’ll be built by Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn in India, China, the US and Europe. We expect to get our first glimpse of the Pear in late 2023, and it is expected to go into production in 2024.

Henrik Fisker says that it will be priced under the equivalent of Rs 22 lakh – relatively affordable, but it could be ineligible for government subsidies under the current regulations. Nevertheless, it’ll compete with premium mass-market EVs such as the MG ZS EV and other upcoming global electric cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Mini Cooper SE
