Harley-Davidson’s electric sub-brand, LiveWire, will soon introduce new models in its portfolio which will cater to different groups of enthusiasts. The American company will soon go public, and a presentation intended for the investors gives us a glimpse into LiveWire’s upcoming models.
The biggest development in the company’s expansion plans is the new scalable ‘Arrow’ architecture which will be the base for the upcoming S2, S3 and S4 models. Here’s what the new architecture promises:
Unlike the LiveWire One (formerly called the Harley-Davidson LiveWire), the ‘Arrow’ architecture negates the need of a frame, and uses an aluminum battery pack to form a monocoque frame. The steering head and swingarm are directly bolted onto the battery case. Its motor is housed behind the pack, close to the swingarm pivot, while the electronic control unit is positioned in the front.
This architecture will allow LiveWire to play around with different headstock designs, motors, and batteries. In fact, LiveWire says that it will use the new ‘21700’ format cells made in 50V, 100V, 350V and 400+V forms. Furthermore, depending on the battery capacity and motor, the company will equip the product with air or liquid cooling.
While liveWire hasn’t revealed how the S2 will look like, the chassis and the alloy wheel design hints that this could be the production version of the electric flat-tracker concept Harley-Davidson once showcased. While the concept was called the EDT600R, the production model could be named S2 Del Mar, after the Californian town.
The LiveWire S3 model will be based on the same principles as that of the S2, and would be more affordable. For this, the American company has teamed up with Kymco, which could possibly result in the latter sharing its IONEX swappable battery tech with LiveWire.
Finally, the LiveWire S4 will be the bikemaker’s ‘heavyweight’ motorcycle, and very likely the flagship model. This bike will be equipped with the latest technologies and will feature improved range and charging capacity.
LiveWire’s new line of products seem very interesting, and its tie-up with Kymco hints that the American will slowly expand to emerging markets. But will we ever see one in India? Though the debut of the LiveWire is unlikely to happen in India anytime soon, we finally have some interesting developments from the long-awaited Tork electric motorcycle.
