2024 is coming to an end, and this year brought a wide range of car launches to our shores. These included new-generation models, facelifts, and even variant additions. From SUV-coupes like the Tata Curvv and Mahindra XEV 9e to performance-oriented EVs like the BYD Seal, we bring you a recap of the top cars launched in India in 2024 that made major headlines. Kia kicked off this year with the launch of the 2024 Sonet facelift. It was the first mid-life update of the subcompact SUV, bringing changes such as a refreshed exterior, a mildly updated interior, and new features like a 360-degree camera and ADAS. Offered across three broad trims, the 2024 Sonet is available with two petrol engine choices and a diesel powertrain option.
Hyundai launched the updated 2024 Creta, one of the standout products in the Korean carmaker's portfolio. It received revisions in its styling and interior, enhancing its overall appeal. The facelifted Creta also got new features, including a digital driver's display, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS. Additionally, the 2024 Creta introduced the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol option in its powertrain department.
Tata Motors introduced the Punch EV, the fourth electric model in its lineup. It is offered with two battery pack options: a 25 kWh pack, providing a claimed range of 315 km, and a 35 kWh pack, delivering a claimed range of 421 km. Compared to its ICE-powered counterpart, the Punch EV features a revised interior with features such as a 10.25-inch infotainment system, ventilated front seats, and a wireless phone charger.
Chinese automaker BYD launched its all-electric sedan, the Seal, in India. It is offered in three variants with multiple powertrain options, delivering a claimed range of up to 650 km. Standout features of the Seal include a rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic glass roof, and powered seats with heating and ventilation functions.
This year, Hyundai also launched the N Line model of the 2024 Creta. Over the regular model, the N Line features performance-oriented updates, including a firmer suspension, sharper steering response, and a dual-tip exhaust system. With the Creta N Line, you also have the option to choose a 6-speed manual gearbox paired to the 160 PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the overall feature set remains similar to the standard model.
Toyota launched the Fronx-based Urban Cruiser Taisor in India. It shares its overall styling with its Maruti counterpart, though with unique elements such as tweaked bumpers and lighting features. Feature highlights include a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charging, a heads-up display, and a 360-degree camera. Like the Fronx, the Urban Cruiser Taisor is offered with two petrol engine options.
BMW launched its first performance-oriented EV in India, the i5 M60. Offered as a completely built-up unit, it is powered by 601 PS/ 795 Nm dual electric motors, coupled with a 81.2 kWh battery pack. The i5 M60 can accelerate from standstill to 100 kmph in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 230 kmph. It locks horns with the Porshe Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT on our roads.
Mahindra launched the facelifted XUV300, now renamed to the XUV 3XO. It features a completely overhauled design, an updated cabin with segment-first features like a panoramic sunroof, and enhanced safety with the inclusion of Level-2 ADAS. Like before, the XUV 3XO is offered with three engine options, including two turbo-petrol choices and a single diesel option.
Force Motors expanded the Gurkha range with the launch of its 5-door version. The 5-door Gurkha boasts a revised cabin with features like a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, and powered windows. These updates are also available in the 3-door model. Both models are also offered with a more powerful 140 PS/320 Nm 2.6-litre diesel engine, paired to 5-speed manual gearbox and a four-wheel-drive (4WD) system.
Maruti launched the fourth-generation iteration of its popular hatchback, the Swift, in India. It features a refreshed design with an updated cabin and is now offered with a new 82 PS 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. New features include a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a wireless phone charger, and the standard fitment of six airbags.
After much anticipation, Tata Motors launched the Altroz Racer on our shores. It is a sportier version of the premium hatchback, powered by a 120 PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Altroz Racer also features exclusive cosmetic updates inside out, and directly rivals the Hyundai i20 N Line.
BMW also launched the new-generation 2024 5 Series in India. For the first time in India, BMW is offering the 5 Series in a long-wheelbase version, and currently with a single variant available with a petrol engine option. It is powered by a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 258 PS and 400 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2024 5 Series competes with the Audi A6 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The Nissan X-Trail made its comeback to our market after nearly a decade. It is sold through the fully imported route and is offered in a single variant. The X-Trail is powered by a 163 PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with mild-hybrid technology. Transmission option is limited to an e-CVT automatic gearbox. Top features include an 8-inch infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital driver's display, a 360-degree camera, and an electronic parking brake.
In the latter half of July 2024, Tata Motors took the wraps off both the Curvv and Curvv EV, which immediately garnered attention due to their striking design. Later, the carmaker revealed the pricing of the Curvv EV, starting at Rs 17.50 lakh (ex-showroom). It gets two battery pack options, with a claimed range of up to 585 km. Top features include powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, 9-speaker JBL sound system, and ADAS.
Citroen launched its SUV-coupe, the Basalt, in India. It shares its styling with the brand's other models, like the C3 and C3 Aircross, but stands out with its sloping roofline. In terms of features, it gets a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, and automatic climate control. The Basalt is offered with an 82 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 110 PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine.
After a long wait, Mahindra launched the Thar Roxx, which is basically an extended wheelbase version of the standard Thar. It features a tweaked design with LED headlights, a revised six-slat grille, and dual-tone alloys, while maintaining the overall boxy design of the SUV. The Thar Roxx also boasts an upmarket interior with features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front-row seats, and ADAS. Engine options include a 2-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel.
Following the launch of the Curvv EV, Tata launched the ICE-powered Curvv. While it shares a similar SUV-coupe design, it features distinct styling elements that set it apart from its electric counterpart. Feature highlights include a 12.3-inch infotainment system, powered and ventilated front-row seats, a panoramic sunroof, and ADAS. The Curvv is available with two turbo-petrol engine options and a diesel engine choice.
The 2024 Alcazar facelift is the next Hyundai on our list, showcasing a revamped design and updated interior. It is offered in both six and seven-seating options and features amenities such as a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging in first and second row, and electric boss mode. The 2024 Alcazar retains its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engine options, paired with both manual and automatic gearbox choices.
After the ZS EV and Comet EV, MG launched its third electric offering, the Windsor EV, in India. The all-electric crossover is offered with two pricing models: one where you pay for the entire vehicle upfront, and the other where you are charged Rs 3.5 per kilometre through the Battery-as-a-Service rental program. The Windsor is powered by a 136 PS/200 Nm electric motor coupled to a 38 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 332 km.
Kia brought back its premium MPV, the Carnival, to India, but now with a steep price tag of Rs 64 lakh (ex-showroom). Compared to the last Carnival sold in India, the new-gen model features a completely revamped exterior and interior, with upgrades such as dual 12.3-inch displays, powered front and second-row seats, and ADAS. It is offered in a single Limousine Plus variant and comes with a sole 2.2-litre diesel engine option.
Mercedes launched the new-gen E-Class with an updated design and a more premium interior. It is offered in three variants with three engine options, including a 381 PS six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. Feature highlights include a 14.4-inch infotainment system, two 12.3-inch displays, a 17-speaker Burmester sound system, dual wireless phone chargers, and a panoramic sunroof.
Skoda entered the sub-4m SUV space with the launch of the Kylaq. You may view it as a mini version of the Kushaq, as it shares a similar overall exterior and interior design. It comes equipped with features such as a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a wireless phone charger, and a sunroof. Sole engine choice includes the 115 PS 1-litre turbo-petrol, paired to manual and automatic gearbox options.
Following its 5-star GNCAP rating, Maruti officially launched the new-gen Dzire on our shores. It features a completely new design that sets it apart from the Swift, while its interior shares similarities with its hatchback counterpart. The 2024 Dzire is powered by an 82 PS 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and is also offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit option, which reduces the power output to 70 PS.
Mahindra turned heads with the introduction of two new all-electric SUVs, the BE 6 and the XEV 9e. While the full prices of both EVs are yet to be announced, their starting price has been revealed, beginning at Rs 18.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The XEV 9e can be considered an all-electric SUV-coupe version of the XUV700 and is offered with two battery pack options, with a claimed range of up to 656 km.
On the other hand, the BE 6, which is part of Mahindra's 'Born Electric' sub-brand, features an aggressive design with a sloping roofline. Like the XEV 9e, the BE 6 is also offered with two powertrain options but delivers a claimed range of up to 682 km. Both models are equipped with features such as powered front-row seats with ventilation, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, and a fixed panoramic glass roof.
Honda launched the new-gen 2024 Amaze with updated styling and segment-first safety tech, ADAS. It is offered in three broad variants, and is powered by a 90 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Top features include a 8-inch infotainment system, a 7-inch semi-digital driver’s display, and standard fitment of six airbags. Bookings for the Amaze are underway, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January next year.
