Here Are The Mahindra Thar Variants That Get Rear-wheel Drive Option

• Thar 4X2 will be available in both AX Opt and LX variants. 
• Diesel to be standard, while petrol will be limited to top-spec LX.
• Thar to get two new colour options: Everest White and Blazing Bronze.

In this run up to the launch of the Mahindra Thar’s rear-wheel drive variants, we now have our hands on the detailed variant-wise powertrains info. For starters, the RWD variants will be offered with a new 118PS 1.5-litre diesel and 152PS 2-litre turbo-petrol engines. The diesel engine will be manual only, while the turbo-petrol engine will be automatic only in RWD configuration.

So the new diesel engine in the Thar will be standard across the lineup. However, if you opt for the turbo-petrol RWD powertrain, then your choice is limited to the top-spec LX trim only. The turbo-petrol engine of the base-spec AX Opt is four-wheel drive only. 

Mahindra will also take this opportunity to introduce two new colour options across the lineup: Everest White And Blazing Bronze. Save for a revised stack of switches in the central console, no other changes have been made to the SUV’s design or overall features list. The Thar being a sub-4 metre SUV and getting a new 1.5-litre diesel engine makes it eligible for a lower tax slab. So we expect entry-level pricing to drop from Rs 13.59 lakh to around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue rivalling the Force Gurkha and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which is expected to debut at Auto Expo 2023.
