2023 was an incredible year in terms of new SUV launches. Manufacturers are now offering SUVs right from the entry-level segment all the way to the premium offerings. Most of the models here are mass-market models that were highly anticipated with many notable names. Here are the ten most popular SUVs launched this year.
The XUV400 was one of the first EVs for the masses from Mahindra competing against the popular Tata Nexon EV. One of the highlighting factors here is the fact that the XUV400 is longer than the XUV300, the car it is based on. It also gets EV-specific design touches that ensure it stands out from its petrol-/diesel-powered counterpart. More details about the XUV400 can be found in our in-depth launch story.
The highly anticipated Maruti Suzuki Jimny was launched in India in a 5-door avatar, one of the first markets where the longer model was launched. Barring the side profile obviously, the overall design has stayed similar to the 3-door version. The SUV is best known for its off-roading prowess and you can read about the same here.

The Fronx is a crossover based on the popular Baleno. Visually, its design is inspired from the larger Grand Vitara and it gets an attractive exterior design. Even the insides are similar to the popular compact SUV. The most notable bit on the Fronx is its enthusiast-friendly 100 PS / 138 Nm 1-litre Boosterjet engine. Take a look at our first drive impressions on the Fronx here.
The Exter is Hyundai's new micro-SUV aimed squarely at the Tata Punch. And with it, the Korean marque threw in features like a sunroof and dashcam, which worked wonders as 75 percent of prospective Exter customers opted for variants with a sunroof. Take a look at our detailed review of the Hyundai Exter at this link.
The C3 Aircross is a unique model, as it’s the first SUV in its segment to get a third row of seats which, when not required, can be removed for more boot space. And even though its features list is barebones, it must be noted that the Citroen C3 Aircross is also the most affordable 3-row SUV in the market. Based on the same platform as the Honda City, the Elevate is Honda’s entry in the highly competitive compact SUV segment. Now, though the Elevate might lack some stand-out features, it makes up for it with its smart styling, proven 1.5-litre NA petrol engine, and spacious interior. Then there is the ADAS tech to boast as well. Read more about the Elevate in our in-depth review.
The Nexon was first launched in 2017, but Tata has gone all out for the 2023 facelift. The SUV’s key changes include a striking exterior design, a revamped dashboard layout, plenty of new features, and a new transmission option as well. As for the EV version, Tata has managed to eke out more range. You can read about the Nexon and the Nexon EV in our first drive review for further details.
Kia marked its entry into the Indian market with the Seltos back in 2019. For the 2023 version, Kia has opted to build on the strong foundation of the SUV and has focused on a “don’t fix what isn’t broken” philosophy. You get even more features now and the new turbo-petrol engine puts out more power as well. Read more about the Seltos in our first drive report.
The Harrier and Safari twins were recently facelifted by Tata, with the biggest talking point being that both received a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. While they have remained the same mechanically, Tata has completely revamped the exterior with a futuristic design, and added new features on the inside as well. You can read more about these SUVs in our reviews.
With conventional SUVs still out there, manufacturers are now offering exciting alternatives as well as hardcore off-roaders in the mix, making it a delight for the SUV buyer in the market. Let us know your pick amongst the popular SUVs of 2023 in the comments below.
