Remember the legendary Hindustan Motors Ambassador that first showed up in 1957, was well known as India’s family car and had a long 57-year journey before we bid adieu to it in 2014? Well a recent report has surfaced suggesting the icon may be making a comeback. Let’s take a deep dive at how this possibility has surfaced:
A good three years after the Ambassador was discontinued, Groupe PSA (Peugeot and Citroen) acquired the Ambassador brand in 2017 for Rs 80 crore which gives the Ambassador a potential door for a return in India. Citroen recently kicked off its India innings via the C5 Aircross with the C3 entry-level hatch breaking cover in June.
Another clue comes from Stellantis itself, which Groupe PSA is a part of that retails Jeep and Citroen models in the country. In 2019, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares (then Chairman, Managing Board Groupe PSA) gave a minor hint on a potential Ambassador return, stating, “For us, Ambassador is an asset, of course. We understand what it represents in this country in terms of status, comfort and reliability. We are too young in this market to be able to have a clear cut opinion about how we should use it. So, what we have decided is to keep it in our hands and try to understand the market better while at the same time look for better opportunities for aligning it with the Citroen brand. It could very much bridge the past with the future.”
Details are still scarce on the Ambassador’s return but reports hint that the comeback might happen by 2024 and would be manufactured at Citroen’s plant in Chennai. Considering its a potential comeback, expect the iconic bulbous shape to be retained but with a modern twist. Expect more details on the new Ambassador to show up in the near future.
