Launching a new sports car on its anniversary is a trend that Honda seems to follow, but will it do the same for its 75th anniversary?

Anniversaries are special. They are a highlight and celebration of the commitment and dedication that goes into maintaining a relationship or keeping a legacy going. In this case, 2023 marks 75 years of Honda as a brand, which is a big feat. Given the prestige of the occasion, a lot of rumours have been flying around that Honda might reveal a new sports car to mark this anniversary and it is for a good reason.

Trip down memory lane

Remember the S2000? A 2-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired to six-speed manual transmission, which sent power to the rear wheels only. Even though it is nothing fancy, the powertrain is deceptively simple with a 9,000 RPM redline and an output of around 240PS.

Leaving the specifications behind, the significance of the S2000 was that it commemorated the Japanese carmaker’s half century back in 1998. And now, a similar story could brew as the Honda Europe’s vice president Tom Gardner reportedly told Autocar that "Watch this space: 75 years - we had the S2000 at 50. Who knows…"

To decode that message, he meant to say in 2023, Honda turns 75. They launched the S2000 when it turned 50, so you never know, we might just get a new sports car for the celebrations of the 75th anniversary.

Now, no further details about the category or even the powertrain have been revealed. But this move, i.e. revealing and launching a new sports car, definitely makes sense. Given that the NSX has just bowed out recently, there is a vacant space waiting to be filled.

Also, just over 12 months ago, amongst its plans for an electric future, Honda had also teased two new electric sports cars. So could it be one of these? As mentioned before, information is heavily limited so no confirmation on that front just yet.

Given the job that Honda has done with the 2023 Civic Type R, we know that it isn’t short on performance witchcraft and technology. Everything being considered, we still don’t know what kind of car to expect, and whether it’ll be a rebirth of the S2000, a replacement for the NSX or an all-new model. Even the nature of its powertrain is in the dark. So, guess we’ll all just have to wait, and as said by the VP Gardner himself - watch out for this space.
