Hyundai has always been one of those defining carmakers that set and pushed segment boundaries, especially in India. It did so with the Santro, the OG i10 and i20, and the Creta, just a few examples from the past. Not only did they define expectations for their segments with pioneering technology, features, a value for money proposition and potent performance, they also showcased the wide spectrum of cars that resulted in Hyundai having a well-rounded product lineup. In fact, there’s a Hyundai for everyone right up to Rs 50 lakh mark!
And the story continues today with newer offerings like the Exter, Verna, and Ioniq 5 – to name a few – being the flag bearers for its present day lineup. These serve as an epitome for Hyundai’s diversified product lineup in the country. And even though they might be very different at their respective cores, the underlying ethos of all these products is still what has defined, and defines, Hyundai today. So let’s take a look at how it manages to do so, beginning with its smallest SUV offering, the Exter.
Hyundai has always been a brand that follows a customer-centric approach. And that’s what the Exter is - a customer centric hatchback, based on the Grand i10 Nios, that’s styled as an SUV. Why? Simple. Because everyone wants an SUV regardless of the size and the Exter is one of the most affordable ways of getting into one. And its affordability factor doesn’t mean a compromised experience, be it on the practicality, comfort or the features front.
Best in segment boot space, segment-first features and an abounding list of standard safety equipment culminate in a package that’s rather appealing. And then there’s the powertrain - the smooth and refined 83PS/114Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine that can be had with either a 5-speed MT or AMT (with paddle shifters). There's even a CNG option on offer for those looking at lower running costs. So despite being a sub 10-lakh car, the Exter ticks all the boxes you’ll ever be needing your car to. Talk about versatility!
You can’t talk about versatility and not talk about the new Verna. The modern front with the sleek DRL and the sculpted rear end help it stand out from its competition. And styling apart, the Verna is easily the most loaded offering in its segment. Segment-first features coupled with the spacious cabin and comfortable ride quality, and the Verna is the perfect companion for your family and friends. And when they aren’t around, it’ll be the perfect companion for some spirited driving, courtesy of the new 160PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. So be it inside the city at crawling speeds or out on the highway, munching up the miles, the Verna is home irrespective of the task at hand.

Cruising on the highway will also be all the more relaxing and safer now, thanks to the presence of autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision avoidance and lane keeping assist.
Ioniq or i(c)oniq? Irrespective of how you choose to look at the moniker, the large electric hatchback from Hyundai is the epitome of a value for money package. It takes on luxury vehicles double its price tag and does so without dropping a sweat. Interior quality, features, expansive space, practicality, performance, range – you name it and the Ioniq 5 has got it with top notch execution. And it does so while looking like something inspired from a cyberpunk movie. Its styling is zany to such an extent that saying ‘people will happily break their necks while trying to catch a glimpse of the IONIQ 5 on the road’ won’t be an exaggeration. That’s how unique the Ioniq is, especially considering its price tag.
And if you ever feel a bit enthusiastic, the Ioniq 5 will be happy to scratch that itch with instant power delivery from its 217PS rear-wheel drive motor. It gets charge from a 72kW battery pack, so that means that fun won’t stop anytime soon, thanks to a ARAI-claimed driving range of 631km.
These offerings apart, cars like the Creta, i20 and Venue have been the stalwarts in their respective segments, offering feature-rich propositions and a plethora of powertrain options, including diesel. While, on the lower end of the spectrum, offerings like Grand i10 Nios and Aura further shine light on how well-rounded Hyundai’s product lineup is in India. If there’s a segment, there’s an Hyundai in it. Accessibility and a steed for every need done right.
