The customer is always right. And in today’s day and age, the customer wants to be spoiled. Spoiled with many options and choices for them to choose from and that’s exactly what the automotive industry is doing. Take the sub-4m SUV segment for example — you effectively have more than seven options to choose from, but within that spectrum, there’s one car that stands out – the Hyundai Venue. Why?
The answer is pretty simple, to be honest. Because of options and choices, of which the Venue has plenty, be it in terms of the variants or the powertrain options available. With a total of 12 variants making up the tech- and feature-heavy brochure, the Venue offers customers a choice of three very different engines with different characters. So you don’t have to sacrifice and settle for a powertrain that doesn’t fit your bill. But then, with so many options, which engine is right for you? Let’s find out in this story, but let’s take a look at Venue’s specs first:
So, the three engines on offer include a NA petrol unit, a turbo-petrol unit, and a diesel engine. Let’s see which engine is for whom.

1.2-litre NA petrol: This smooth and refined four-cylinder NA petrol engine loves a smooth drive. It’s nonchalant in the way it picks up speed, and doesn’t like to be hurried. But then, who does, right? So if you’re one that likes to drive along with the speed of traffic, not overtake and zig zag your way around everyone, then this engine might just be for you.
It’s ideal for city runabouts with an easy to use manual gearbox, both of which get the job done in a trouble-free manner. When you ask for it, the engine will also happily cruise at triple digit speeds for all day long too. It’s literally the epitome of a ‘smooth operator’ .
1-litre turbo-petrol: This engine feels like life at the age of 25 – energetic. It doesn’t need to crack a bone or stretch any muscles to get going.
120PS and 172Nm of peak output on offer is plenty to make any drive effortless, which makes this engine the perfect companion for the people who like to get behind the wheel and really take in the vibes of the drive. It’s not ‘push you back in the seat’ or ‘scare your passengers fast’, but you won’t have to ring its neck to pick up the pace and drop the slow moving traffic behind you. There’s a manual for you to feel fully involved in the drive experience, or an option of a dual clutch automatic transmission, which is quick and convenient at the same time.
Moreover, if you want your shoes to match the pace, there’s the N Line iteration of the Venue, waiting for you with all its sporty N bits.
1.5-litre diesel: An inevitable future unicorn – this 1.5-litre diesel engine is a rare offering in the segment. It’s the same engine found in the bigger Creta SUV and is the ideal choice for people with a high mileage. Unlike the other two engine options which work best for a specific use case, this engine is the perfect companion for every drive – be it in the city, or on the highway, or even on high altitude hills. It’s an all rounder with oodles of torque on offer right from the lower end of the rev range, which means you can pull away in a higher gear without dropping a sweat, or a gear. It might not be the most refined of the lot, but it definitely is the most fuel efficient and arguably the easiest to drive too.
We reckon other manufacturers could learn a thing or two from Hyundai because the Venue isn’t a one-product wonder. They offer multiple options with the Creta and even the Verna sedan, giving people an option to choose and not settle for something because of a lack of options.
