Hyundai India has just launched the 2023 Verna compact sedan, with prices starting from Rs 10.9 lakh (ex-showroom). The latest iteration of the sedan has almost all the elements needed to make it the segment leader. And that’s what Hyundai is aiming to do, to double the sales of the Verna and take the top spot in its class, which is currently held by the Honda City.
The last few months of the outgoing Verna saw an average sales of close to 2000 units before the plug was pulled. And when the previous-generation model was introduced in 2016, it recorded an average sales of around 2,500 units. So it’s safe to say that the carmaker is expecting the model to register monthly sales of around 4000 to 5000 units of the latest-generation model.
During the launch event, the carmaker announced that the 2023 Verna had already racked up 8,000 bookings before prices were revealed. That said, the Verna does have a task ahead as its competition has been renewed recently. The City recently got a facelift, while Skoda and VW brought the Slavia and Virtus that replaced the ageing Rapid and Vento almost a year ago. And for similar pricing, you also get hot-selling SUVs from Hyundai Group: the Creta and the Kia Seltos.

So yes, whether Hyundai achieves its aim or not is something only time will tell. However, the new Verna does ooze buyers with a modern and upmarket interior and more rear legroom and is loaded with kit and potent petrol engine options. We’ll also be driving the new-gen Verna soon, so stay tuned to our first-drive review.
Prices of the new Hyundai Verna range between Rs 10.9 lakh and Rs 17.38 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from the aforementioned rivals, the sedan locks horns with the ageing Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as well.
