Hyundai sold 3,687 units of the Verna in May 2023.
The Verna’s sales were more than double that of the runner-up, the Skoda Slavia.
VW sold 1,631 units of the Virtus, while Skoda recorded sales of 1,695 units.
1,532 units of the Honda City were retailed in May 2023.
The Hyundai Verna created quite a ruckus in the auto industry when the carmaker first took the wraps off the new compact sedan. Opinions were split, groups were formed and the initial impressions of the whole industry were a bit polarising. But it seems like nearly three months after its launch, the narrative has turned and the Verna has grown on people, with it now topping the compact sedan sales charts.
Not only did the new-gen Verna outsell its competition, it did so by giving them a proper thrashing, bagging almost double the numbers of the next best thing. Hyundai sold a total of 3,687 units, while VW, Skoda and Honda managed to sell 1,631, 1,695, and 1,532 units of the Virtus, Slavia, and City, respectively.
If you’re wondering, the Honda City managed to record a similar number as the Verna’s current sales back in May 22, with 3,628 units sold. But given that the City has just recently received a minor facelift, while the Verna is an all-new model, there’s no doubt that the crowd is flocking towards the newer Korean compact sedan. The VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia, meanwhile, are relatively newer models, launched in 2022.
The strong sales figures can also be down to its alluring features list which packs segment-first kit like ventilated seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Venue-like digital driver’s display, ambient lighting, climate control, and auto headlights. It also boasts ADAS technology, so far only offered on the Honda City in this segment. And finally, the Verna offers six airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, and a rear defogger as standard equipment.

So it's not without a reason that the Verna has topped the sales chart. Then there are the powertrain options, largely similar to what the competition has to offer. You can read about a detailed powertrain comparison between the compact sedans here. Hyundai retails the Verna between Rs 10.89 lakh and Rs 17.37 lakh (ex-showroom).
