It doesn’t look like a base model at the first glance as it packs couple of niceties that make it look premium

Tata finally revealed the 2023 Safari facelift after releasing multiple teasers online. Bookings are open for the model, which gets its first design overhaul since its inception in February 2021. The facelifted Safari 2023 is offered in four broad trims: Smart, Pure, Adventure, and Accomplished. And while you might have seen how it looks in its top-spec guise in earlier reports, in this read, let's take a closer look at how the 2023 Safari facelift looks like in the base-spec Smart trim.

Outside, the Smart trim gets a blacked out parametric grille design without colour-coded accents, and comes equipped with connected LED DRLs (without the welcoming function) and projector headlamps, Though it misses out on the fog lamps.

Alloy wheels are now available from the base model and they are the 17-inch units from the outgoing car. Despite this being the base model, it gets a connected LED tail lamp with an illuminated centre strip (without the welcoming function) and a silver-finished skid plate.

Inside, the main omission here is the lack of an infotainment system, but still, it packs a 7-inch digital instrument cluster from the outgoing car. The cabin of the base model comes finished in black and ash grey fabric upholstery. The base model also packs the new four-spoke steering wheel with illuminated Tata logo. Since it's a base-spec model, you can pick it up as a 7-seater only, as the 6-seater option is limited to the top-end Accomplished+ variant.

In terms of features, you get fully automatic single-zone climate control, electrically adjustable ORVMs, tilt and telescopic steering, AC vents for 2nd and 3rd row passengers, USB Type-A and USB Type-C charging ports for all rows, and boss mode functionality.

In terms of safety it comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, all-wheel disc brakes and ISOFIX mounts for child seats, rear parking sensors, 3-point seatbelts for all seats and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Niceties such as gesture controlled powered tailgate, ADAS, ventilated and powered seats with memory function, 10-speaker JBL sound system and connected car tech are limited to higher-end variants.

In terms of powertrains, it gets a sole 2-litre diesel engine that delivers 170PS/350Nm, paired to 6-speed manual transmission. However, if you want an automatic transmission, it’s offered from the Adventure+ trim onwards.

Prices for the 2023 Tata Safari are not out yet but given the revisions it could carry a higher price tag compared to the current model which starts from Rs 15.84 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue its rivalry with the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700 7-seater.
