While the Harley-Davidson X440 has just been launched in India, the Triumph Speed 400 also made its debut recently. So how do the two fare against each other visually? Let’s check it out in detailed images:
Both bikes have neo-retro styling cues all over. The X440 has a muscular design language with a beefy tank, and shares some similarities with the Harley-Davidson XR1200 from yesteryears. The Triumph Speed 400, meanwhile, has an aggressive design with a sculpted tank and upswept chrome exhaust. In several ways, it looks like a miniature version of the Triumph Speed Twin 1200.
The Harley-Davidson X440 is powered by a 440cc air-cooled engine with an oil-cooler, producing 27.4PS and 38Nm.
The Triumph 400, on the other hand, is powered by a 398cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that generates 40PS and 37.5Nm. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed transmission, and a slip-and-assist clutch. But while the Speed 400 is ideal for spirited riding, the X440’s power figures should be enough for relaxed cruising on the highways.
The Harley-Davidson X440 gets a 43mm KYB inverted fork and gas-charged, preload-adjustable twin shock absorbers, along with 320mm front and 240mm rear ByBre disc brakes, with dual channel ABS. It has 18-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels, with MRF Zapper Hyke tyres.
The Triumph Speed 400, meanwhile, gets a gold-finished 43mm upside down (USD) fork and a gas-charged preload-adjustable monoshock, a 300m disc brake at the front with a radial caliper and a 230mm rear disc brake, and dual-channel ABS as standard. It comes equipped with 17-inch alloys, with a 110-section front and 150-section rear tyre. The international-spec model gets Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres, though the Indian model might get Pirelli Diablo Rosso Sport tyres.
The Harley-Davidson X440 gets a round TFT display showing distance-to-empty readout, a clock, real-time mileage indicator, gear indicator, battery health, and more. It is also smartphone-compatible, with features like turn-by-turn navigation, music control and message alerts, along with a USB 3.0 port near the console.
The Triumph Speed 400 comes equipped with a semi-digital console that shows the basic readouts like gear position, trip, odometer, and distance-to-empty. The absence of smartphone connectivity, however, is a big miss.
The fuel tank capacity of the X440 is 13.5 litres, while that of the Speed 400 is 13 litres.
The seat height of the Harley-Davidson X440 is 805mm, which is 15mm higher than the Speed 400’s 790mm seat height.
The Harley-Davidson X440 is available in three variants: Denim, Vivid, and S, priced at Rs 2.29 lakh, Rs 2.49 lakh and Rs 2.69 lakh (all ex-showroom) respectively. The price for the Triumph Speed 400 is yet to be revealed, but we expect it to be around Rs 2.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
So considering all the factors and the prices, both are a good proposition with each having its own positive points. Hence, choosing between the bikes will eventually come down to whether one wants a budget-friendly bike for relaxed cruising on the highways with a hint of sportiness or a slightly more premium bike offering both a sporty commuting experience as well as touring dynamics.
