The Hilux was shortlisted by the Indian Army’s Northern Command after rigorous testing in challenging weather and tough terrain

  • The Toyota Hilux is the latest vehicle to be acquired by the Indian Army.
  • It was put through rigorous tests in tough weather and terrain before it was finalised.
  • The Hilux will serve with the Indian Army’s Northern Command.
  • Other notable vehicles used by the Indian Army include the Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio Classic.

The Indian Army now has a new vehicle in its fleet to take on ever challenging operations. And it’s none other than the tough-as-nails Toyota Hilux pickup truck. It was acquired by the Indian Army’s Northern Command and was finalised after putting the pickup through rigorous testing in challenging weather and tough terrain.

Even though the newer version has more electronics and features, it’s still a Toyota and that means it’s one of the most reliable machines out there. And considering the challenging and ever-changing terrain, the Army-spec Hilux will be enduring, that’s what our soldiers always need – a machine that can sustain abuse and still run without hiccup.

The Toyota Hilux’ tough-as-nails character can be attributed to its body-on-frame construction, which helps it to take any sort of abuse. And couple that with a powerful 204PS 2.8-litre diesel engine with four-wheel drive and low range, you basically have a pickup that’s ready to go anywhere.

It’s not just the off-roading bits the Hilux does well; it fares well even in terms of practicality. So there’s enough space in the cabin to seat five occupants. And the large loading bay will be very useful for the Indian Army when carrying a variety of equipment.

In India, the Toyota Hilux is priced from Rs 30.4 lakh to Rs 37.9 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s a more premium alternative to the likes of the Isuzu V-Cross. Apart from the Hilux, the Indian Army will also be acquiring the Mahindra Scorpio Classic, and possibly the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as well.
