The Jeep Compass is one of the few mid-size SUVs offering 4x4 four-wheel and 4x2 two wheel drivetrain options

We are back with another real-world performance comparison story! For this edition, we pitch the 4x4 four-wheel drive Jeep Compass against its 4x2 front-wheel drive version. Both the drivetrains get the same 2-litre diesel engine and the same 9-speed automatic transmission options. Before taking a look at the performance numbers, let's do a spec check:

Jeep Compass Spec Check

Engine

Power

170PS

Torque

Drivetrain

4x2 (front-wheel drive) and 4x4 (AT only)

The Compass is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine that powers the Tata Harrier and MG Hector. But unlike those SUVs, the American barge gets a 9-speed automatic. The 4x4 drivetrain can only be had with the automatic, while the front-wheel drive 4x2 version can be had with both manual and automatic transmissions.

The Compass four-wheel drive wins in the test that matters the most: the sprint from 0-100kmph. But the difference is marginal and it is likely that the four-wheel drive system helped it get better traction off the line, which helped it hit the 100kmph mark quicker.

However, things are different in the quarter mile test, where the 4x2 Compass takes the win. The time difference is just .22 seconds and the speed difference is just 2.46 kmph. It is likely that the heavier weight and the mechanical losses that come in due to the 4x4 system helped the front-wheel drive Compass take the win in this test.

In the braking test, the 4x4 Compass stopped within a slightly lesser distance of 40.84 metres, compared to the 4x2 Compass’ stopping distance of 42.68m metres.

So according to our real-world performance test, a four-wheel drivetrain doesn’t actually ask a compromise on the performance front, at least in the case of the Jeep Compass. The Compass’ 4x4 drivetrain is limited to the top-spec Model S(O) trim, while the 4x2 drivetrain is available throughout the variant range. Prices for the Jeep Compass start from Rs 20.69 lakh and top out at Rs 32.27 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals the VW Tiguan, Citroen C5 Aircross, Tata Harrier, and Hyundai Tucson.
