The upcoming Jeep Meridian three-row SUV is slated for an India launch in June 2022. But you can start checking out the SUV before that as test drives and bookings are slated to commence from May. But still if you’re very much interested in the upcoming Toyota Fortuner rival, select Jeep dealers are accepting unofficial bookings already.
The Meridian is essentially a derivative of the Compass, but with distinguishing design touches. For instance, the revised 7-slat front grille, rectangular LED headlights, and the bespoke bumper design is reminiscent of the Grand Cherokee. In profile, the SUV is around 354mm longer than the Compass, and 158mm of it is in between the wheels. It also gets bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels for distinction. Connected LED tail lights round off the overall design.
Inside, the dashboard has been lifted off from the Compass, albeit in a black/brown dual-tone colour scheme. Plus, the Meridian will initially be offered as a 7-seater only. Speaking of which, from the looks of it, the third row will have stadium-like seating (positioned slightly higher than the second row) and seems best suited for kids.
Even the feature list is almost similar to the Compass’. Highlights include a digital driver’s display, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, a 9-speaker Alpine sound system, panoramic sunroof, powered front seats with ventilation, and a powered tailgate.
Passenger safety is taken care of by six airbags (standard), electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and tyre pressure monitoring system. The Brazilian model also gets Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which isn’t offered here.
Underneath the hood, the Meridian will initially get the familiar 170PS 2-litre diesel engine, paired with a 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic transmissions. Front-wheel drive is standard for both transmissions, while all-wheel drive is limited to the two-pedal set up only. FYI, the 9-speed AT FWD powertrain is new and we expect it to be available in the Compass as well.
The Jeep Meridian is expected to be priced from Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it in contention with the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and the Skoda Kodiaq.
