It could be a union of two iconic brands – one brawny and rowdy, the other luxurious and vicious

Let me be the first to say it, “Oh My GOD!”. Brand acquisitions in the automotive world are common, mostly predictable and seldom awe worthy. But KTM, or rather Pierer AG (KTM’s parent company), having signed the dotted line to purchase nearly 25 percent MV Agusta via capital increase is just going to be something incredible.

For now, the transaction between the two European marquees is simple: KTM, which is a very popular brand with an extensive network of dealerships globally, will help MV Agusta distribute more bikes in common markets, the first of which will cover North America and Mexico.

But ultimately, if this partnership were to be extended to an ownership, it wouldn’t surprise us and in fact be quite welcoming. KTM already has Husqvarna and Gas Gas in its kitty. Adding an exotic bikemaker like MV will be the feather in its cap.

KTM is known and revered for its rowdiness in motorsport. But over time it has become more synonymous with off-road and adventure riding than road racing. Yes it has interests in MotoGP and also makes psychotically fun road-going bikes ranging from 125cc to 1300cc, but its premiumness lacks a bit of luxury. And that’s where MV Agusta’s brand and heritage could help out.

The Italian marquee isn’t a volume game player like KTM, and MV Agustas reek of luxury. The only thing common between the two brands is that both love making mental fun motorcycles. MV Agusta may not be as active as KTM in mainstream motorsport today, but at one point it was a formidable name in most neighborhoods.

What does this mean for us in India? Well, nothing too immediately. However, for MotoGP fanatics, the thought of an MV Agusta MotoGP team surely does make us reminisce about the golden days of the Italian brand when it used to dominate the racing scene.
