But we don’t judge a book by its cover, especially considering the number of unknown factors here

The Mahindra Thar 5-door’s testing phase has presented us with a myriad of spy shots till date. A few of them confirmed new styling elements, while a few confirmed new features for the elongated Thar. But the latest spy video that has surfaced online seems to be a bit concerning, even troubling, at first glance. Let this reel below show you why:

Yes, the Thar got stuck and that too in relatively light slushy terrain. This should’ve been a cakewalk for the Thar, considering how impressive Mahindra SUVs are off the beaten path. But to be fair to the Thar, we have to keep the satire aside and dive a little deeper into the issue. There are two ways about why the Thar was stuck and was struggling to get out of what should’ve been a relatively small task for it.

First, it seems to be the 4x2 variant of the Thar 5-door. If you look closely, only the rear wheels of the test mule were spinning. It is evident that the front wheels were not being driven and hence, it didn’t necessarily get the grip it needed to get out of that sticky situation.

Secondly, Manali can get freezing cold this time of the year, and it is possible that the patch might have had both snow and ice mixed with the mud, which makes things even more difficult. So having the right type of tyres for tricky weather conditions like this is also a very important factor, and it is likely that the test mule was on all-season tyres.

Either way, we don’t think this specific video is enough to judge the upcoming Thar 5-door by. It should be nearly as capable as the standard Thar, while adding a whole lot of practicality into the equation. An unveiling and launch is expected later this year, and the 5-door Thar will (obviously) be positioned and priced above the smaller 3-door model, the prices which start from Rs 11.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The Mahindra Thar 5-door will pose as a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and will lock horns with the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
