Mahindra has given us a first look of the upcoming Thar 5-door, now called the Thar ROXX, ahead of its proper debut on August 15. It gets a handful of design changes over the smaller Thar 3-door, giving the Thar ROXX its own unique identity. And in this report, we are going to explain what those design changes are.
Up front, one of the main changes for the Thar ROXX is its more dominant-looking body coloured grille as opposed to the smaller six-slat grille of the three-door model.
You’ll also notice that the elongated off-roader now gets new LED headlights as opposed to the halogen units of the current Thar. Lastly, even though both off-roaders get a butch bumper, the Thar ROXX gets a contrasting silver hue in the middle as opposed to the Thar 3-door’s all-black one.
Come to the side profile and the obvious thing you’ll notice is the Thar ROXX’s extended wheelbase to accommodate the extra doors to access the rear seats. Another element that catches your eye are the larger dual-tone alloys instead of the monotone grey-coloured alloys in the standard Thar. Lastly, keen-eyed Thar enthusiasts will notice that the Thar 5-door gets squared-out wheel arches instead of the round one (rear) in the smaller off-roader.

Mahindra is yet to show the full rear of the Thar ROXX, but the teaser confirms that it will get new LED tail lamps with an inverted ‘C’ motif. Also, spy shots have hinted that the Thar ROXX’s tailgate mounted spare wheel will get a cover.
While the Thar ROXX’s cabin is yet to be revealed, spy shots have confirmed that the dashboard layout will be identical between both models. That said, the Thar ROXX will get a handful of feature additions over the 3-door model, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry with push button start and a 360-degree camera.
Apart from that, the Thar ROXX is also expected to come with dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, six airbags, front parking sensors and ADAS.
The Mahindra Thar ROXX will borrow the Thar 3-door’s 150 PS 2-litre turbo-petrol and 132 PS 2.2-litre diesel engines, but likely with more power. It will be offered with both a 6-speed manual and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. While four-wheel drive will be available, Mahindra will also offer a rear-wheel drive version of the Thar ROXX.
The Mahindra Thar ROXX is expected to be priced from around Rs 15 lakh onwards (ex-showroom). It will lock horns with the Force Gurkha, while being a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
