Electronic stability control is a necessity for Global NCAP and the upcoming Bharat NCAP crash tests

Technology, comfort, and safety are the three important aspects of development. While the latter two are perpetually being improved and developed by all, the safety parameter has only recently started to gain attention with the government and even consumers becoming more and more aware. As a result, we’ve got constantly changing safety mandates that define the minimum requirements that everyone has to abide by and there are new ones coming in as well.

But before that, Maruti has decided to go ahead and make electronic stability control (ESC) and seat belt reminders for all passengers a standard fitment across its range. ESC is a mandate required by the Global NCAP and also a very necessary piece of kit which keeps the car in check around corners and makes sure you don’t have a lateral loss of grip.

Given that 3-point seat belts will soon be made compulsory via the upcoming regulations, seat belt reminder for all passengers being a standard fitment is probably a handy thing to have in your brochure. Also, because a lot of people, especially us Indians, tend to look the other way when it comes to strapping up at the back, having a reminder will help all of us keep in check.

Carmakers like Hyundai have already made ESC a standard fitment, but not throughout its range, as it is only offered in the Venue sub-compact SUV and models above it.

The two features being standard across the range would really be a great addition to Marutis, especially the ones that sit on the lower side of the spectrum, considering cars like the Alto K10 don’t even get ESC in their top-spec trims.

And it isn’t like Maruti is synonymous with safety to begin with, considering the less than ideal recent safety test results, so ESC and seat belt reminders for all passengers being standard will surely improve the safety aspect of Maruti vehicles. In general, the overall vehicle safety is only set to improve further, at least on paper, with the newer mandates that will be enforced. The latest next-in line is likely to be standardisation of six airbags, but the degree of effectiveness of such mandates are yet to be determined.
