Yet Another Recall From Maruti Suzuki, This Time It Is The S-Presso...

The Maruti Omni. Just saying the name is enough to trigger a flood of memories, and for some, mild trauma. If you grew up in India, chances are you either had an Omni in the family, got ferried to school in one or if your childhood was slightly more dramatic, you were once suspiciously eyeing an Omni that had its sliding door slightly open near your neighbourhood. Yes, the Omni wasn’t just a car; it was an icon, a legend, and let’s be honest, a preferred getaway vehicle for those on the wrong side of the law.
And now, out of the blue, the internet is abuzz with rumours that Maruti Suzuki is bringing back this beloved box on wheels. But is it really happening? Or is it just another case of automotive Chinese whispers? Let’s dissect this Omni comeback theory with the seriousness it deserves (which, admittedly, isn’t much).
The Omni, first introduced in 1984, was like that one uncle at family gatherings who refused to change despite multiple interventions. It stayed largely the same for over three decades, sticking to its barely-there safety features, an engine that somehow mustered enough power to ferry 20 people in one go if need be, and a simple design that could be replicated with a geometry box.
Then came the BS6 emission norms, which required manufacturers to upgrade their engines to be more environmentally friendly. The Omni’s 796 cc petrol engine, shared with the iconic Maruti 800, had remained largely unchanged for over three decades. It simply couldn’t be tweaked any further to meet the new standards.
As time and regulations wait for no man or van. With increasing safety norms and emission regulations tightening their grip, the Omni was finally shown the door in 2019, after a production run of over 35 years! The cost of upgrading the Omni to modern standards simply outweighed the expected returns. Especially considering it was a raging hit in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns where buyers are extra cost-sensitive.
It was never crash-tested because, frankly, there was nothing to test. It crumpled at the mere thought of an impact. With no airbags and no crumple zones, the Omni simply couldn’t survive in a world where even compact hatchbacks now come with six airbags.
There’s no concrete proof that the Omni is making a comeback in 2025. Moreover, it’s highly unlikely that the Omni would return any time soon. Maruti Suzuki has never publicly confirmed it, nor have insider sources even hinted at the possibility of a new Omni being on the cards.
Every now and then, the internet loves to resurrect old vehicles in the form of rumours, leaks, or badly photoshopped images. This time around it is an AI-generated image. The return of the Omni, while exciting, currently falls into the wishful thinking category rather than a confirmed reality. We understand why there’d be excitement surrounding the Omni, but, it’s best to take these rumours with a handful of salt.
This rumour started from a Facebook post from an account called - CarMania 4x4 and they had done multiple posts on how the Maruti Omni 2025 is launching soon, including a full-fledged video consisting of multiple AI-rendered images, which were then picked up by meme pages and some not-so-credible news pages. These pages did not have any credible sources or authority attributed to support their claims.
Hence, this folks, is a hoax.
For all its flaws, the Omni was a car that made sense in India. It was cheap, practical, and could seat seven people or more if you didn’t care about personal space (which nobody cares, in a typical Indian household).
It was the go-to vehicle for businesses, school vans, and, well, certain underground activities. The Omni was so deeply ingrained in pop culture that if Bollywood ever needed a van for a heist, a chase sequence, or an utterly suspicious scene, the director’s first words were: "Get me an Omni."
It was easy to fix, had great fuel economy, and despite its safety hazards, it remained a workhorse. It was a vehicle that refused to die, even when it probably should have. But alas, regulations had other plans.
When the Omni left, the Eeco stepped in to fill the void. But let’s be honest, the Eeco lacks the same sketchy yet endearing personality of the Omni. It’s like replacing a chaotic fun uncle with a responsible accountant.
The Eeco is larger, more powerful, and technically better in every way. It has well taken over responsibilities as a school van, an ambulance, the people mover and more. But does it have the same charm? Possibly not.
At this point, the return of the Maruti Suzuki Omni in 2025 is a pure, baseless rumour. The AI-generated image, the lack of any hint from Maruti Suzuki and the Eeco’s thriving sales are enough reasons to not take this hoax seriously.
Until we actually hear from Maruti Suzuki officially, let’s cherish the memories of the Omni we knew. The car that was simple, flawed, unforgettable and an absolute legend.
