Maruti Suzuki Swift Leads The Top 5 Best Selling Hatchbacks In India In June 2024

Hatchbacks in India remain a significant force due to their form factor, easy handling, and affordability – making them practical choices for car buyers. However, June 2024 was unfavourable for hatchbacks, with many models experiencing a decline in numbers.  With that being said, here are the top 5 best-selling hatchbacks of June 2024.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Since receiving updates with the fourth-gen model, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has rapidly become a top choice for buyers in the hatchback segment. So much so that in the previous month, Maruti sold 19,393 units of the hatchback, claiming the top spot in overall car sales. Despite its popularity, the Swift saw a decline in June 2024, with just 16,422 units sold. However, the Swift’s sales experienced a 3 percent increase from the 15,955 units sold in June 2023.

The new-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift is offered with a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine generating 82 PS and 112 Nm. You can configure it with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It is equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, a 6-speaker Arkamys-tuned sound system, and cruise control. On the safety front, it comes standard with six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill start assist, and a rear parking camera with sensors.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Moving on to the second Maruti in this list, the Baleno swaps places with the Wagon R in June 2024's best-selling hatchbacks. It is the only model in this report that sees an increase in both month-on-month and year-on-year sales. Despite continuing without any update, Maruti delivered 14,895 units of the Baleno in June 2024, which is a 16 percent increase from 12,842 units sold in June 2023 and a 6 percent increase from 14,077 units sold in May 2024.

The Baleno is offered with a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine, which can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission (AMT). Additionally, you can configure it with a factory-fitted CNG kit that produces 77.5 PS/98.5 Nm and is available only with a 5-speed manual. 

Feature-wise, the Baleno comes equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker audio system, a heads-up display, cruise control, and automatic climate control. Safety features include up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a 360-degree parking camera with sensors.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 

As one of Maruti's best sellers, the Maruti Wagon R comes in at third place. In June 2024, over 13,700 units of the Wagon R were sold, down from 14,492 units in May 2024 and significantly lower than the 17,481 units sold in June 2023.

Available with two petrol engine options, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R can be had with either a 67 PS/89 Nm 1-litre petrol or a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine. The former can also be configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit. Transmission choices include either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. 

The Wagon R gets features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 4-speaker sound system, power windows, and steering-mounted audio controls. Safety is taken care of with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and hill-hold assist.

Maruti Suzuki Alto

Maruti’s entry-level offering, the Alto, secures fourth place in this report. The Indian carmaker retailed 7,775 units of the Alto in June 2024, a decline from 11,323 units sold in June 2023 but a slight increase from 7,675 units delivered in May 2024.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto is available with a single 67PS/ 89Nm 1-litre petrol engine option. This powertrain can be further configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit which reduces power output to 57 PS/ 82.1 Nm. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. 

The Alto comes equipped with features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, steering mounted audio controls, manual climate control, keyless entry, power-adjustable ORVMs, and a 4-speaker sound system. On the safety front, it gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability controls and rear parking sensors.

Hyundai i20

Finally, in fifth place is the Hyundai i20, which despite its premium offering, secures a spot among the best-selling hatchbacks, thanks to its extensive feature list. Hyundai sold over 5,315 units of the i20 in June 2024, marking a 3 percent increase compared to the 5,169 units sold in May 2024. It however sees a decline of 14 percent over the 6,162 units sold in June of previous year. These numbers include sales of both the i20 and i20 N Line.

The Hyundai i20 is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine which generates up to 88 PS/ 114 Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a CVT-type automatic transmission. 

The i20 N Line, on the other hand, is powered by 1-litre turbo-petrol engine generating 120PS and 172Nm. It is paired to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. 

Feature-wise, it gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, connected car technology, a voice-enabled electric sunroof, C-type USB charger, wireless phone charging, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a semi-digital instrument cluster. Safety is taken care of with six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, and a rearview camera with parking sensors.
