The ZS EV, currently MG’s only electric offering in the country, might be getting a stablemate soon

  • New EV will be a crossover for the mass-market segment using heavily localised parts.

  • Expect a more compact powertrain setup than the ZS EV.

  • Prices will range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, rivalling the Tata Nexon.

While MG Motor India currently has the ZS EV electric SUV as the carmaker’s sole EV offering, another one is in the pipeline. The carmaker has confirmed the second electric vehicle will arrive by early 2023 as a heavily localised model, probably squaring off against the Tata Nexon EV

MG Motor India President and Managing Director Rajeev Chaba confirmed the announcement, saying, “For our next product after the Astor, we have been thinking about an EV and now we have been very encouraged with the absolute clarity from the government side that EV is the way to go. We have taken the decision that we are going to introduce an EV by the end of the next financial year.”

As for what kind of product it is, Chaba added, “It is actually a kind of a crossover and this is going to be based on a global platform, which we are going to develop and this will be an EV for mass market for all the emerging markets including India. We will customize this car for the range and the Indian regulations and customer taste. It will be specially tailored for India.”

So it’s safe to say that the upcoming electric vehicle will slot below the ZS EV, and could come with a more compact powertrain setup. For reference, the ZS EV is powered by a 145PS electric motor with the 44.5kWh battery pack helping it offer a range of up to 419km.

As for how it could be priced, it’ll range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom, India). That puts it right in the ballpark, if not a more affordable price range than the Tata Nexon EV that retails from Rs 14,24 lakh to Rs 16.85 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Expect more details to surface heading into 2022, so stay tuned.
