Audi replaces the A4 models by introducing new A5 sedan and station wagon models.
Audi S4 and S4 Avant get replaced by new S5 and S5 Avant.
The A5 models get refreshed looks and styling both inside out.
With Audi’s new nomenclature, even numbers stand for EVs, and odd numbers for ICE vehicles.
The new A5 range now gets a mild-hybrid powertrain.
Audi has replaced the entire A4 line-up with the new A5 range of vehicles, which boast refreshed styling and added features. With respect to Audi’s new nomenclature, all the even numbers will be used for its EV models and odd numbers for its ICE models. Hence, the A4 line-up has now been renamed to A5 as the entire range now gets more efficient, thanks to a mild-hybrid system. The A5 range is also the first model to be based on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, which we’ll talk about more in the story:
The new Audi A5 models get a cleaner and sleeker exterior design inline with Audi’s current design language. Along with an extended wheelbase, the A5 models now get larger wheels and a low-slung profile. The front fascia gets an overhauled look with new honeycomb design for the grille along with silver accents down below, and sleeker LED headlamp setup.
The side profile gets prominent shoulder and fender lines with flushed door handles, giving the A5 a striking appearance with redesigned alloy wheels for a sporty stance.
At the back, it looks chic with a sculpted bumper, boot-lip spoiler, a gloss-black diffuser and silver garnishing along with rectangular exhaust tailpipes. The all LED headlights and taillights are three dimensionally designed and get Audi’s signature matrix OLED with distinctive signature lighting elements to choose from.
Along with the exteriors, the A5 range now gets a completely redesigned interior layout, which has been more ergonomically designed by being slightly driver centric. The new dashboard layout replaces the central console with redesigned AC vents and a new chunky steering wheel design. It takes heavy inspiration from the recently revealed Q6 e-tron, but with a few tweaks here and there.
The dashboard features a driver oriented curved display housing an 11.9-inch digital driver’s display, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and an optional 10.9-inch passenger display. Furthermore, it gets a heads-up display which can be configured to control various functions of the car.
Additionally, it is expected to be equipped with all other feature niceties like wireless phone connection for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof (for Indian variants), ventilated and powered front seats with memory function, powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, multi-zone automatic climate control unit, and a premium sound system. Safety tech will encompass multiple airbags as standard along with ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, a 360 degree surround view camera with front and rear parking sensors and Audi’s Parking Assist, and even ADAS Level 2 features like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
For the international markets, the new Audi A5 is being offered in a variety of engine options. It gets a 2-litre TFSI turbo petrol engine in two different states of tune producing 150 PS and 204 PS respectively, with the latter available with the all-wheel drive Quattro variant.
The second option is a 2-litre TDI turbo-diesel unit producing 204 PS and 400 Nm, mated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission with both front-wheel and all wheel drivetrain options.
The sportier S5 and S5 Avant models get a 3-litre V6 TFSI engine which produces 367 PS and is also mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Furthermore, Audi has extensively worked upon the suspensions and steering, to amplify the driveability of the A5 and S5 models.
Notably, the 48-volt mild hybrid system is exclusive to the 2-litre TDI and 3-litre V6 TFSI engines, and acts as a strong hybrid system, aiding the engine by producing an extra 24 PS. It also enables pure electric driving under parking conditions and stop & go traffic conditions.
While it is yet to be disclosed which powertrain option makes its way to India, we anticipate that the 2-litre turbo petrol unit might be the one entering our market upon launch.
The Audi A5, will soon be replacing the A4 models in India and we expect them to enter the Indian automotive domain sometime in 2025. We expect the A5 to be priced around Rs 55 lakh, giving competition to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series LWB.
